You folks may/ may not be interested, sounds like the drums of war are beating, experience from my contractor day tells me this is a very interesting development and change to policy.Read the fine print.
    The Civilian Expeditionary Workforce

The Civilian Expeditionary Workforce serves alongside our military men and women at the forefront of America’s mission around the globe. A mission to protect. A mission to build communities and renew nations. A mission to spread freedom and democracy.

The Defense Department is forming the Civilian Expeditionary Workforce that will be trained and equipped to deploy overseas in support of military missions worldwide. The intent of the program is to maximize the use of the civilian workforce thereby allowing military personnel to be fully utilized for operational requirements.

Program participants are eligible for military medical support while serving in their overseas duty station. All participants will undergo pre- and post-deployment medical testing, including physical and psychological exams. Civilians reassigned from their normal duty to serve overseas will be granted the right to return to the positions they held prior to their deployment or to a position of similar grade, level and responsibility within the same organization, regardless of the deployment length. Families of deployed civilian employees shall be supported and provided with information on benefits and entitlements and issues likely to be faced by the employee during and upon return from a deployment.

The Civilian Expeditionary Workforce participants’ service and experience is valued, respected and recognized as career-enhancing. Our uniformed forces deploy around the globe in service of this mission, but we will not ask them to do it alone. Stand up and join them because when we go, we go together.

Be a part of the Civilian Expeditionary Workforce. A list of available opportunities and benefits, including pay differentials is available on the CEW website: www.cpms.osd.mil/cew.

Sounds like a great way to thin out the swelling numbers of surplus mouths to feed here at home (i.e., unemployed 20-somethings with college degrees in subjects like "Chicano Studies" and "Art History"), as well as to permanently eliminate skilled, educated, and/or professional people (read: potential revolutionaries).

Didn't the Nazis have something like this run by IG Farben? Civilians who came into the occupied countries and ran the whole show behind the scenes? This seems modeled on that. Is the stiff armed salute optional?

"participants are eligible for military medical support while serving in their overseas duty station"

This may be the best clue as to why. Reading between the lines, no VA benefits after serving for CEW.

because,as I am very familiar with,.gov contracted out support work to private companies like Blackwater,Dyn,KBR,and L3.This program extends the leave benefits, leave your existing job, and by law they must rehire you when you finish your tour without loss of time or benefits--wonderful deal!Plus, they provide you with top notch med bennies while serving....and you are not a contractor but .gov employee. That has other benefits, for example,if captured or killed will receive bennies contractor companies do not offer......for example, while working one contract I signed and was briefed if I was captured or killed,I would be reported as "a tourist".......thinking back not a good deal, remember Stancil and the other 2 FARC hostages?.......this is a good opportunity for certain individuals......not for everyone.......especially armchairs, but worth applying if for the only reason gaining a security clearance.......the janitors at Lockheed make $45k just for being able to hold a clearance....and clean toilets....a sum of money is paid by employers just for being able to hold- clearance.....enough said.Lots of opportunity these days......I do not want to hear any crying about not finding a job.....

It frees up a soldier to fight. I see nothing wrong with it. In fact, if I were younger I'd take a serious look at it.

Get your funky self down to KBR and sign up! I've got a 62 year-old buddy that did just that. He's in the 'Stans right now as we speak.
