A couple of weeks ago, I watched "National Geographic: Civil War Gold," which showed the recovery of a lot of old US gold coins, some still in uncirculated condition, from the SS Republic which was sunk due to a hurricane in 1865. It was pretty interesting. It is on Netflix for those who have it.

Odyssey Marine is the same outfit that is in battle with Spain over the load hauled up from that centuries old galleon.

I love how the article says the silver is returning to it's rightful owner England, though the ship was sunk coming from India.

what i can't figure out is how these governments amassed so much silver even before Irons was born and before Teddy B. started pimping silver. Its almost as if in some long, lost world the PTB thought it was money.

The first written use of silver was when Abraham bought the grave site CAVE for the family.

    CIRCA: 2,000 Before Christ

Of course they would have used it way before that say around 4,000 Before Christ YOU MUST BE OLDER THEN DIRT. (Like Adam)

I'm going to call you NIMROD who lived at the same time as Abraham. He was a builder and hunter and a real gold HOOR.

    Genesis 23

    New International Version (NIV)
    The Death of Sarah

23 Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2 She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.

3 Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.[a] He said, 4 “I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead. ”

5 The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6 “Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.”

7 Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. 8 He said to them, “If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf 9 so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.”

10 Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city. 11 “No, my lord,” he said. “Listen to me; I give[b] you the field, and I give[c] you the cave that is in it. I give[d] it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.”

12 Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13 and he said to Ephron in their hearing, “Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.”

14 Ephron answered Abraham, 15 “Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels[e] of silver, but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”

16 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.

17 So Ephron’s field in Machpelah near Mamre —both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field—was deeded 18 to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. 19 Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron ) in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.

    Dear Extended Family,

When will QE become the public practice of all Western world central banks?

It will more than likely come over a weekend just like this weekend. Major sovereign bonds like the Spanish and Italian will be over 7% yield and rising. The Euro will be under pressure. Equity indices everywhere will be under pressure. Recent economic statistics in the entire Western world will be quite negative. The impact of the drought will have driven food prices through the roof.

This time all central banks of the Western world, not just the Federal Reserve will announce emergency measures on Sunday evening.

It is coming a lot faster than the gold bears think. It can be any weekend now. It could be this weekend.

The longer the central banks wait, the more nuclear and longer the QE blast will have to be maintained.

The price of gold is going to $3500 and higher.

    Respectfully,
    Jim

i don't know about shekels but two millenia (2,000 years) later Judas was paid with 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus. Historians believe the 'pieces' were Roman denarius which were approximately equal to our silver dimes. So roughly 2.5 - 3 ounces of silver. of course back then the price of silver was not manipulated so that was a month's wages.

i never looked into the size of a shekel but its hard to envisage a coin smaller than a dime. it could have been larger- say equal to 3 dimes or one quarter - but that seems unlikely to me as it seems to be referred as the basic unit of exchange. so 400 denairus would be a years' plus worth of labor.

As for the current value of a Biblical "half-shekel," Maimonides records it as weighing 160 grains of barley, which is equivalent to 8 grams, or 0.28 ounces. With the current rate of silver at about $5.00 USD per ounce, that means a Biblical half-shekel equals about $1.40. times 100 equals about $140.00, about what it costs to get a marriage license today in most places...

A shekel was about 15 grams of silver. This means you would need about 750 grams of silver. At today's price of $17.50 an ounce, for 26.5 ounces, that is about $455

Sorry, I'm an engineer, I like doing stuff like this.

HS was wrong two shekels equal about an OUNCE not, three mine musta coulda woulda be kinda INFLATED from the Jewish FED. (that's a joke)
