Default Am I the only person left who can still function without a smartphone???

I just got back from the supermarket. EVERY person there had their face buried in their phones. I watched one girl push her cart right into a freezer case. This other idiot was aimlessly walking around the aisle, phone to his ear, cart abandoned diagonally in the exact center of the aisle, asking whoever "honey" is where the peanut butter was. He was standing under the sign that said "Aisle 17" and "Peanut Butter" was, like, the second thing listed.

What the hell is so enthralling? Your old friend from high school update their facebook status? Did your favorite celebrity tweet about their lunch?

Walking through the aisles was worse than navigating a highway full of drunks! At least drunks realize every now and then that they should be paying attention. And yes, I did get hit: my left ankle got run over from behind.

If the grid goes down, these people won't be able to find their way out the front door. Will the SHTF so they can starve to death and get it over with already*?

    Rant off. Where's the Jameson?

*No I don't really want that, but sometimes I think psychopathy would be liberating.

I've got a basic cell phone on a $30/month plan for 1000 minutes that I never come close to using.

lol You're not alone. Just have a regular cell (and land line.) Only use the cell for talking and an ocassional text and never use it when I'm driving. Probably don't use it more than 15 times in a week.

Man this hit a nerve with me:

Ever go to dinner with someone and have them sit there and spend THE ENTIRE TIME talking on their cell phone instead of you? I'm like hey motherf***er, I took the time to be here the LEAST you can do is shut it off while we're here at the table. You want to talk to someone? I'M RIGHT FREAKING HERE!

Or the morons that STILL talk on the phone during a movie. Even the intros now warn them not to do it and still they do it. And if someone says something THEY GET MAD THAT YOU'RE INTERRUPTING THEM! WTF!

The good thing is you can use excessive use of cell phones to easily identify the future zombies you'll have to look out for when TSHTF.

I use a smart phone for work, I have to due to the nature of my work. I would love to not have a cell phone at all.

I have seen people show up in the E.R. with no insurance, and no money to pay for service, but they sure do have the most up to date smart phone and as soon as a new model comes out they stand in line for hours to get one.

I went to the movies the other day with my son, I seen at least 10 to 15 people answer their cell phone during the movie and say "hey I'm at the movies" and this texting B.S. all the damm time, its all out of control.

    same here,

however I did get a chance to use one a few times

I'm thinking that they just don't fit into the homesteading life style / a simpler life

my life has has been about going backwards in time,

I just picked up an 1800's fanning mill to clean the grain I have planted out back,
and we also got a great deal on a 5' wide set of double disks to pull behind the Farmall Cub
which is now wearing a set of under belly cultivators that work a hell of a lot better than
the tiller I was using (fast weed control and much bigger gardens)
we also have a chance to acquire a small thrashing machine
but it is in the loft of a collapsing barn so it will be tough to get out,
ok; I got off the subject, sorry

Same here in Wisconsin. A college aged student just was convicted of killing another college aged student because she was texting her boyfriend while driving. I hope she gets the max sentence but unfortunately these brain dead dopes will quickly forget about this and it will happen again.

What's amazing to me is seeing people pulling out of their driveway and immediately on their cellphone. Excuse my language but what the **** is so important that you have to use the cellphone the minute you get in to and start driving a 2000 pound or more vehicle? Why couldn't said call have been made while in the house or while walking to the car?? F'ing morons.

Oh yeah another thing that gets under my skin. When I go to workout, idiots are so lost without their phone that they have to have it with them while lifting weights or while doing cardio work. Do you mean to tell me you can't go 30-60 minutes without your phone? I would love to "accidentally" drop an 80-pound dumbbell on their phone if they left it on the floor.

You folks just need one of these!

I spend my time in the sheep heard shutting them off one by one and trying not to laugh my a@@ off!!

Sure they're illegal in the US but I don't really care. Turn your anger into barely supressed laughter.

Can you hear me now? Hello? HELLO??

The one I got works on every stinkin' cell I have come across at around 15-20 feet!

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS ONE ACTUALLY WORKS OR NOT

I certainly agree with you, AgBar.

I also experience the same exact behavior while I am in public AND while I am driving. I actually roll my window down at stop lights and tell the people that are engaging in phone conversations while they drive " you are going to endanger others and yourself. Get off the phone, you will get into an accident!". They never answer me. The people just stare at me in shock.

There are obviously appropriate times to use phones, just like anything else.

If your possible smart phone needs are not great nor relatively useful or efficient, don't get one, but don't knock them. There are some extremely useful apps.

I guess malls have to plan ahead for visitors who abstain from watching where they’re walking.

Fountain Lady’s lawyer told ABC News he intends to “hold the responsible parties accountable” for the incident, though it’s unclear whether this references that no railing prevented her from falling in the fountain, that nobody responded to the incident after she fell or that a video of her fall was released.

But it turns out that “Fountain Lady,” also known as Cathy Cruz Marrero, faces legal charges herself – charges even more serious than assuming that pedestrians can avoid large structures on pathways.Marrero was charged in late 2009 with running up bills of more than $5,000 on a coworker’s credit account at Target and Zales, according to ABC News. She was supposed to repay the money but never did, and will appear in court for sentencing in April.

We can only hope her lawyer will give her a two-for-one discount.

Meanwhile, Fountain Lady is complaining that none of the mall staff helped her out of the fountain or even asked her if she was okay.

Regardless of whether this is grounds for legal action, there is no denying that the video is still hilarious.

So a guy goes into the Mens room and finds a vacant stall. He perches on the toilet and hears the stall door next to him open and then latch shut. You know the awkward moment, right. Don't want to do anything too loud.

Anyway, the guy in the next stall says "How you doing?" The first guy is alittle set back but replies that he is doing ok. Second guy then says, "What's going on tonite?" Not wanting to be rude, first guy tells him that he is taking the wife out to dinner. Pretty annoying don't ya think?

Finally the second guy says, "Hey, I'll have to call you back. The guy in the stall next to me thinks I am talking to him".

There is one place that I don't use my cell phone. And that is when I am on the throne.

Been toying with getting a Smart phone. When I can afford it. Then I should probably get a FB account and then I could download the app on how to walk, talk and drive while I use my phone.

I see the same sh-t all the time. People pulling outta their drive way or pulling outta a store parking lot and they're on the phone. I've seen people on a 50 mph road slow down to 15 -20 mph because they're on the phone. Un-f'ing believable!!

I do not have one. Do not plan on getting one.

Funny thing is that the dumb phones have better reception and the battery lasts at least a week.

They are, but it's not really enforced. Note that the jammers normally do not block emergency signals, such as calls placed to 911. I was going to buy one as well, but a stronger model from a different company. Some of them have ranges up to 75 feet in the open.

I was also looking at getting one for inside of the car. But the portable jammers aren't really powerful enough to jam anything more than 1 car length in front/back/side, and it seeems like the coverage is spotty. They have stronger, permanent jammers that you can install, but it can get way expensive.

I'll try see if I can find it.

There's this site that was good

You're not alone, but we may be a minority. I have a very basic, prepaid cell phone that I've use 4 times in the last 6 months. I've never sent a text message in my life! My daughter sadly is a smartphone junkie, she really can't function without it. She says her whole life is on her phone and went into a near panic when she lost it!

I do have a smartphone with internet and I use it on a regular basis but I am not addicted to mine. I like the basic features (internet, email, etc.) of a smartphone and that is why I bought one. However, I have control over my phone and it does not control me because 1.) I do not feel obligated to answer every call that I get on it, 2.) I do not feel obligated to answer every text message that I get. 3.) I do not feel obligated to answer every email that I receive on my smartphone.

Yep but I don't care. I rarely eat in restaurants but when we do nobody is talking around us.

I just have a cheapie Tracfone. I buy the 1 year minute deal, get the double deal, and at the end of the year I still have most of the minutes. I think it averages $8 a month. I hardly ever use it, and only reason I even have it is for power outages and work/family emergencies.

I'm so bad about avoiding using it, I don't even know when the battery is dead until I go to use it (for an emergency of course).

Same with computer, geez, I have 3 at home, 1 at work, and I want a smartphone too? NOT! It's overkill to me w/technology, too much, I feel like a prisoner to it, I don't feel liberated by it.

I like technology, to a point, but I personally believe it's becoming too invasive.

I have the same deal with a Tracfone - mine has never gone completely dead as I rarely turn it on other than when I need it. Since I don't wear a watch, I do turn it on when I'm out and want to see the time.

I wouldn't mind having one of those cell jammers Irons wrote about for the motorcycle. People are freaking unbelievable the way they drive when they're on their cell phone. Ohio just changed the law on cell usage while driving, doubt it changes them.

Our law targets mostly young or beginner drivers as they aren't supposed to use a cell phone at all while driving and it makes texting illegal for all drivers. Goes into effect sometime this month.

I stopped using it in traffic because when you shut someone off 90% of them immediatly start to swerve.

If you use it at a red light half the cars don't go when the light changes. Effing oblivions.

That thought entered my mind! I could see (in my mind) the results of idiots staring at their phone, wondering what ta fudge happened, instead of hanging up and driving. Maybe part of the reason using would be illegal.

I used my smartphone at the grocery store last night. My pregnant wife sent me to the store with a very specific list of groceries and I jotted down the list onto the phone. I would much rather risk looking like a jerk then coming home with the wrong item. The main store that I frequent has horrible coverage so there are not many people that use them there. For driving, I pull over for internet searching or text messaging. For talking it depends on the vehicle. My car has bluetooth so I don't mind talking for a little bit. But in my truck I typically don't talk while driving. I understand the rant about smartphones but it seems to be more of an issue with rude behavior than the phone. I love my phone, I can do 90% of my job with it and that gives me some more time to spend with my family.
