    Default GOLD RUSH Finale

The two hour GOLD RUSH "live" finale was great tonight. It was the best of gold porn with over $2 Million in gold bars on the table between the Hoffman Crew, the Snoble Kid, and the Fred Hurt crew.

The smelter for Prospector & Gems was on the show pouring bars from the different crew's last clean out of the season. They're the refiner that makes those neat looking hand pours you see on eBay.

Did anyone of you see it?

If you can catch a re-run, I highly recommend watching it on the Discovery Channel. Portions of it may be on You-Tube soon.

FTR: I searched and searched for the "old" Gold Rush" thread but couldn't find it, so I hope you don't mind this new thread.

Coming this summer, Fat Hoffman and Dave are going to mine in Puru. Next fall, the Snoble Kid is going to open a mine next to Tony Beets in the Yukon, and Fred Hurt is going to try to get equipment far upstream from Porcupine Creek to mine virgin ground in a valley where a glacier melted not too long ago.

Yeah, I know how some of you feel about TV and some of these shows being scripted to some extent, but if you're going to watch any TV this show is good entertainment.

    Cheers

Todd Hoffman looked like he blew the mother load on a giant pile of cocaine. Dude spent the whole show sniffing and acting shifty.

I don't know. I watch the show every week and enjoy it, albeit in a masochistic sort of way because these guys don't seem to have the most sense. But all season we've been hearing "Who hits the motherlode?" Tonight we learned "no one, but you hit it in my opinion." What a crock.

Of course, I'll still watch next season. Yeah, I need a life.

It's been interesting watching all season. It's one of the few things I watch semi regularly on TV. I agree Gold Rush is good entertainment.

Todd Hoffman made some really dumb mistakes,...... but to end up with 830 oz of gold is no easy feat. And then to have Fred Hurt, Parker Snoble, and Tony Beets all point out every mistake Todd made, that looked, well, petty in my opinion. Todd took it all in stride and even shook Freds hand. I'd say the Hoffmans had the last laugh.

QWAK,I have been watching and what constently jumps up and smaks me up side the head as HOW HARD and HOW LONG they work to get that GOLD!!

Small flakes and dust add up but the cost in fuel effort and very real danger makes me wonder how much an hour they actualy get payed?

Parker Schnabel has a good future ahead in mining but I think he's still too inexperienced to put together a crew and a mining operation on his own. He still needs guidance. Todd Hoffman is sort of a likable bozo, but not a great leader or miner. Fred Hurt has experience but I don't really like him. I agree it was sort of a dirty trick to imply any of the teams struck it rich. By the time they pay their expenses and divide up the money no one really made all that much IMO.

QWAK,Miss Understood,I am thinking that after expences that most of them did no get much more than mininum wages per hour and the first two years perhaps not even that much.

I am also wondering how much $$$ Discovery payed them to allow them to watch and record there efforts?

I think that the FILM CREW probably got payed more than the miners did!

One thing for shure they made it ovbious that diging for GOLD is not a fast eazy way to get RICH!

He sure as hell did. Or maybe he's trying to lose weight with poor-man's slimfast (CM)

We might see some of those "Gold Rush stamped" bars show up on ebay but I'm sure they'd be too rich for my blood.

QWAK,Lt Dan,That is what I am thinking too but also there is the ADVENTURE that some people need to be able to test them selves!

The other Discovery program ware they mine in the water off the coast and even cut holes in ice 3 foot thick is INSAINE!

The home made contraptions they come up with to heat there wet suits and pump down air wile floating on flimsey rafts in the summer is off the scale of being dangerous BUT to cut a hole in the ice and jump in --- go to the bottom and stay there for hours vacuuing the bottom hoping to find a fraction of an ounce is beyond my comprehension!

No GOLD im my DUCK POND but a fiew years back I did cover the bottom with SILVER ROUNDS just for giggles and to see if it kept the water clean and fresh with out chemicals . It did not help so I took them out --- besids they kept sliding around and I did not want to glue them down.

Funny how the last cleanout got both Parker and Fred hurt "over their goal" by one or two onces. That right there told me this show is a complete fraud.

Fred hurts boy dredges for two hours and gets the last 20 onces they need to make it over the top? Really? You sure that last "cleanout" was not instead the "producers guarantee"

"hey parker, we need you to do one last cleanout to be used for the "live" season finally. You have 160 now, we guaranteed you 190, so load some frozen tailings in your wash plant, which gives the audience something to look forward to, and we will announce to everyone that your 'last cleanout' was a record breaking 30 ounces".

"The show will not pay you the agreed upon guarantee unless you do one last cleanout, yes, we know there is 2 feet of snow on the ground, and the ground is now frozen, but you will have to convince the audience that the 'last truckload' has 30 ounces of gold"

What a joke. Tony Deets 'adopted' Parker to get on the show. What a fantastic way for Deets to convert some of his gold o fame. Deets is the prime example of money buying fame. Just like Paris Hilton. It would be great to somehow work Paris into the show. And Parker is hiring.

QWAK,lightcycler,I would think that $750.00 a show would just bairly cover the food bill for each of them.

It could pay for BEANS and SPIGETTI Os but not much more and the living conditions are harsh 24/7!

I suose that with the film crew there and watching there was a small added safty factor because of much better comunications and the film crew most likely had choppers available to them for emergency evacuation if some one did get hurt real bad!

BTW:The film crew did try using a DRONE BLIMP --- It crashed a lot!

BTW I thought for sure they were going to tell people they could buy those gold bars at a premium with a certificate of authenticity. They really missed a smart opportunity if they don't do that. They could probably sell an once for $1800 -2000. The public happily pays worse premiums than that for some species of limited edition gold.

I don't think the show is scripted, but they capitalize on problems, personality clashes, and accidents. Naturally the crew is being paid or they wouldn't have made it to the second season. Doesn't Todd still owe his sister a pile of money that he borrowed a season or two ago?

My husband and I have made far more money mining gold and silver from the public who doesn't want it and place minimal value on it. We normally paid them far more than they expected to get so everyone was happy and it sure beats living in a mining camp working hard labor all day for months. LOL.

Sure, the show is an overblown semi-scripted soap opera, but it's fairly good entertainment.

IMHO the show is a mile better than the tired sitcoms, "talent" shows and cops and robbers dramas that the major networks throw out there to distract the Sheeple from what's really going on in the world.

I didn't see the finale, but I sure hope that at some point they sit down with an accountant who goes over the numbers and explains that 40% of the cost is capital equipment, 40% of the cost is fuel, etc, (however it all breaks out), food etc, to show just how difficult it is to mine gold at a profit.

Disclaimer: I do watch the show, as it's somewhat informative and relatively entertaining.

However, if most of the "miners" on that show are representative of the gold mining industry in general, it's no surprise that gold is as rare and valuable as it is. Some of those a$$hats couldn't efficiently mine gold if they were standing in the vault of the Royal Canadian Mint.

lol... i kind of figured that "motherlode" was BS actually. Anyways, wont any really large nuggets be thrown out with the tailings pile? Unless someone on their crew is going over that with a MD.

But pretty amazing to see that the hoffmans got a good bit of gold this year. Especially with the sheer number of screwups that todd and his father make. The biggest one this season was ripping apart their old setup before the new trommel arrived. I'm not going to say the reverse trommel is a mistake because that thing is used successfully elsewhere. Even if they had that running, there's no reason they had to pull apart their old setup. They could have kept it intact as a "plan b"

I am probably wrong, but I think each operation should have been rated on the number of ounces produced divided by the number of people working the operation. Hoffmans has in fact two different operations going, against Parker, who had one operation and 3 people working. Ig t didn't seem fair to me.

I mine for a living, I'll give my take.

The Hoffmans have learned much over the past three years and were little more than dolts the first season. Thier cost per ounce is through the roof because of sorry equipment purchases and sorry work ethic. Had they mined 24/7 from the begining of the season they would have went hat in hand for yet another strip of land from the land owner. Twelve hour shift work would not have killed them but they would have needed three weeks off at the end of it to recover. Their plant throughput needs to be optimized and they should have had a small crusher for the bedrock. You don't get to really see how their pit is laid out but I imagine better pit planning would help a lot. Had it not been for Dave splitting off and running his own pit the Hoffmans would have went bust for a third season. It is rare that old man Hoffman should ever be listened to.

I like the kid, he's industrious and has a strong work ethic. He immediately came up with a plan when he flopped the truck over, and was barely shaken by the incident. I imagine the drilling cost an arm and a leg but he should have done that before he ever moved so much overburden only to find dirt at the bottom. Exploatory drilling is your freind. He should have borrowed a blade (motor grader) for the road up the hill and used his truck to spread pea gravel on the road to get at that hot ore up on the hill. You have to be able to counter your failures (Emmerson Trench) immediately.

The Hurt boys are pretty good too, I think they lose a lot of gold through that wash plant. One thing that Fred knows is that throughput is key. You've got to make every minute count. Think in terms of tons per minute and how fast you can put dirt through the plant. They would be better off with an articulated truck like the other miners are using. Packing all of that dirt out of there with a loader is time consuming and wastes a lot of fuel. Before the patriot act anyone mining could have acquired explosives for the hard floor they encountererd, not sure about that in todays police state but they needed that capability in a bad way. I know they were going after the bottom of the falls but they could have built a better pit through planning, and if they had the above mentioned truck (really they need two so the trackhoe never stops swinging) they could have moved more dirt far faster and had room at the bottom of the pit to actually dig the precious ore that they needed so badly.

It's pretty easy to pick all of them apart. I can pick apart the place I work all day but the big mines can afford stupid mistakes through economy of scale. Knowing how to move dirt as fast as possible is the key to throughput and lowering your cost per ton, pound, or ounce is the key to profit.
If some azzhole claims to be from Nevada but doesn't know what a cattle guard is then that person becomes a known liar.

It's never going to be fair because someone will always have better ground, ect., ect.

Somewhat surprisingly every crew probably made a profit this year, although not a big one.

To the person who said they got paid $750 show, was that in reference to Hoffman/Parker/Hurt as well? That seems really low if the big dogs were only getting $750 as well. Any of them, especially Hoffman, should be able to negotiate a much better deal than that.

It's fair because of the costs. The costs to lease two large plots and operate two crews plus all the equipment has to be huge. Compare that with Parker who has to mine on a plot already depleted. In the end, I think people are right when they say that no one really struck it rich or made much of a profit.

I think people are also being too cynical about the amount of scripting. From what Hoffman and others say, the scripting comes from the TV crew telling them that they should not start doing whatever it is that they want, before the cameras get into place and making them rehash an argument or dialogue that they just had when the cameras were not there to pick it up. Otherwise it's not scripted. If you ask me, a lot of viewers WANT Hoffman and Co. to fail, so it would be better TV for them to do badly and then announce the tag for next season..."Can they finally do it?".

Fred and the Hurts are the least likable in my opinion, they are the only ones I dislike. Hoffman and Co. you have to root for because they are so prone to mistakes and at least humble in that they know they are screwups. Parker is the most likable, he's very inexperienced but has to run the show knowing that everyone around him has been doing their job a lot longer than he has. Parker has blowups but probably far less than I would under that kind of pressure and insecurity, we can at least relate to him.
