I met him in 1967 when I was working as a policeman in Newport Beach, CA.
He was quite a gentleman - and INTRODUCED himself as:

MARION MICHAEL MORRISON - but said I'd know him as John Wayne; and he invited me for breakfast at Bellemy's Restaurant across the street from the Balboa Bay Club. Now a Mickie Dees is there (McDonalds).

He was quite a genuine nice fellow and was really down-to-earth. Not like Buddy Epson whom Andy Devine (said Ebson was a real SOB) wanted me to write a citiation to.

Ah the old days... 44 years have gone by....

I think John Wayne's talents were wasted in many of the Western roles he played over the years. My favorite Wayne films
are "They were Expendable" (WW2 drama set in Phillipines at start of war, Wayne played a PT boat skipper...story based
largely on historical events) and "In Harm's Way"...Otto Preminger film about Pearl Harbor attack and subsequent Naval action
soon after. Wayne played a convincing role as a cruiser captain and later rear admiral.

Cool story. Growing up the Duke was on the TV all the time. I love the John Wayne westerns, I think my favorite is The Cowboys. I believe it is one of two westerns that he dies in.

one of the few Hollywood types that I really liked. He always seemed down to earth, did not forget his roots. So many of his movies I liked.
The people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature. -President James Garfield

All great films. I would add "The Quiet Man" as one of his top films. Great move away from the western setting. There is nothing better than a good Irish asskicking!!

He made the Green Berets in 1968 - I had breakfast with him at 5:00 a.m. Sunday probably in May of 1967.
He looked just like he did in the that movie. He was very polite and rather conservative at that time at about 60 years of age.

He was turned down for DIRTY HARRY a few years later because like the first James Bond he was getting too old.

    I've got two of them...

One the 4 3/4" and the other the 5 plus inch one.

The short one is a .45 blued; the longer one a shiny stainless .45.

Somebody even sold me the holster set-up like in "The Searchers."

Met him fist time in 70' at Chic Iversons VW... Sailed my little Snark in front of his house many of times trying to get Michal to come out to play. His Captain Don Bussey was my moms neighbor in later years at the Anchor Park up on Newport Blvd. We frequented the Old Annex Inn for happy hour.

That was awesome! I loved John Wayne in so many of his films. The Sons of Katie Elder, Rio Bravo, The Shootist, True Grit, Tall In The Saddle. All really wonderful stuff. I liked the way it felt to live in a country that had a man like John Wayne in it, if you can understand my meaning. He represented something about the spirit of this country and the fact that he was here and so well loved was important. Who do we have now, like him? Huh,...nobody I can think of.
Gotta love Ray Stevens, too. The guy who sang 'Here's to you, Marion Michael Morrison.' He's another classic American.
Thanks for the video and cheers!
