    Default First Spouse Coins

I have been converted. I have seen the light! I want to collect those "hot mamas", with low mintages. May Shirley Booth rest in peace.

    My question is the following:

    1. Do you recommend graded or ungraded coins? If graded, 69 or 70?
    2. Do you recommend proof or uncirculated?

    Thank you.

P.S. My endorsement of the First Spouse coins doesn't mean that the mint should abandon my idea of a coin series based on One-Legged Generals of the Civil War.

Those Modern US gold commems w/ sub 10,000 mintages --- all of which are uncirculated --- command big premiums over their PR counterparts. Mintage rules here, get the uncs. Of course if it's a popluar design AND a low mintage Proof (think Jackson, Van Buren) get the proof too.

Personally I like the proofs WAY better, that's why I have proofs to keep and uncirculateds to sell (eventually). Low mintage non-spouse proofs like Jackson and Van Buren are definitely a big winner. Not so sure about ugly Harrison....

Thank you for your advice. Do you collect graded or ungraded Spouses? Do the coins that from the mint come in a capsule and a box, or just a box?

They come in a capsule within a box.
I personally would not worry about the graded/ungraded/69/70/first strike/early release mess. It's all total BS for a 24k coin that is designed never to be handled. Just get them as cheap as you can and you'll be alright.
That said, I think if you can get the accompanying mint packaging you should, because mint packaging for all sorts of "rare" releases is sought after itself.

    DYODD

I have both MS & PF - I get them slabbed because of the REGISTRY at NGC (PCGS has one too)

Frankly the boxes are first class and you can BUY eight different coins right now from the mint.

That is a few BUCKS alone.

2009 was the start of the LOW numbers of finished MS & PF products right in line with very few PM products minted too.

IMO the unc Harrison will always command a premium over the 2007 coins but I don't expect it to reach the kind of premiums the VB and Jackson command. I also think that the bar is going to go lower with some of the 2009 coins in terms of mintage numbers. If the coin losses its status as the lowest minted in the series it's surely going to effect the value on some level.

It's a shame we lost the monster spouse thread, since this has been covered before.
The spouses will probably not produce a low mintage key, rather there will be a slew of MS coins in the low-3000 range, proofs low 5000.
For example the two Tyler coins are on pace to end within 100 coins of each other, maybe 3100-3200. Should that happen, down the line I do not see one commanding a signif. premium over the other or even the Harrison. In that manner they are like the 06-08W Plat. eagles, lots of low mintages, no clear key.
But they will all fetch a high premium because they simply will not be available, like the situation today except the series will be over and there will not be any more coming down the pike to speculate on. The mint is trying to move away from low-mintage issues, they would rather divert it to their profitable bullion stuff, they turned a record profit on it last year and are beating last years pace this year.

Check prices on the 69s versus 70s because the differences are slight between the coins - I would LOVE to know the current POPULATIONS (which always go up by the way) of PCGS - I would then immediately POST
    the NGC POPULATIONS.

The MINT total POPUALTATIONS are interesting to also study in PLACING your BETS!

    I did all of them...

Today I ordered Harrison, Taylor, and Fillmore: and like HC said - the site where I bought them PF slabbed said all three were out of stock when they shipped my order.

Last week they shipped me Julia (dancer) Tyler now that's out of stock too.

They are getting them from the MINT so get'em while you can because the big problem is when gold doubles so does the price on these SPOUSIES!

The box is nice, yet couldnt imagine they might be in much demand in the future without the coin. The boxes are the same for all the spouses, the COA and box might be worth collecting for those that might have coins slabbed. The original mint box with COA should be worth as much or more than a slabbed coin.

" Presidental Mistresses" could be a whole subset. Probably not enough gold at the us mint to just do Kennedy and Clintons.

For CLINTON, Billy BOB, we could do it in CEREMONIAL "TUNGSTEN" for his work in really MESSING America OVER with his buddies Rubin and Summers - who are still somewhat in power.

Since the GOVY doesn't issue the following for the last two years:

4 proof and 4 mint state Gold Eagles = 8

    3 proof and 4 mint state Buffaloes = 7

3 proof and 4 mint state platinum eagles = 7

proof and now mint state silver eagles = 2

I humbly suggest you get what you can before they cost you 4 grand a piece = the current SPOUSES!

Is it possible that the mint might end this series early, since it isn't popular and probably not very profitable either? How would that affect prices?

There is no reason for them to end it - they stopped making 24 other PM coins to date (approximately) and this one they just cut from 40 K to 15 K minting from the first Washington start.

Which is PURR-FECT for the Fat Washington Cheshire Cats will little to NONE really gold and silver to mint for the people according to law.

They are 1/2 ounce of gold - get that and you get everything.

In the box or slabbed - they will have a premium on them over the price of gold - who knows how much the marketplace will assign the number.

Get 'em while they are cheap. Heck you can buy a box of 20 Martha Washingtons slabbed for really cheap today.

I get your point. I was just wondering if a stopped series would have more or less value, numi wise. Yes, the value is still having the gold. I can't afford the 20 Marthas you mentioned even though they are really cheap (everything is relative). But I can afford maybe 1.

If you can BUY one buy one from the US Mint - the TYLERS have low numbers...

Going on this pretense, then the James Buchanan (non-spouse) coin should be the "key". It is the last of the Liberty sub section and he was the only unmarried president. The other three were married but their spouses died before they took office. Perhaps another sub-set there. I'm putting my money on James Buchanan. Time will tell.

I'm thinking that both Jackson and Van Buren will be keys. Being the last, Buchanan may garner more interest in the sub-series and therefore sell more. As HS says, nota lot of options over at the mint. I'll be buying a Buchanan from the mint anyway, at least one proof, and more if the sales numbers are low.

It has high mintage, but Jefferson's liberty is a pretty coin and is still available for a relatively low premium. I bought the uncirculated from the mint and recently bought a slabbed proof.

Good points on Jackson & Van Buren as they are already at a premium. But I'm confused about the Buchanan comment of selling more. If the public were to buy more of JB, there can only be as many sets of the "gang of four" as the one with the lowest mintage. So the worst case would be Jefferson-esque situation. But I doubt Buchanan will have the numbers of a popular Jefferson. And he's still a non-spouse coin, although "that" may raise the mintage. Also gold price may keep numbers lower.

Remember the mintage of the Buchanan will be limited to 15,000 coins across PR and unc. I think it will sell out fairly quickly.

At a recent in-person visit I could not persuade Silvertowne to part w/ their Jackson ngc PR70 for less than their asking price of $1100.

Huge price appreciation on this coin. A few months ago Silvertowne was selling PF70 for $850.

The liberty sub series is appealing because they dont have spouse portraits. They are basically new mintages (one side anyway) of the common liberty coins that were in circulation during the time of those presidents served. Collecting all four in the future might be difficult. They are getting hard to find as it is. Of the four the Jefferson bust is the nicest.

I have to agree about Jefferson. It is a very nice looking coin and ironically you can still find that one without an outrageous markup.

    Taken from CoinTalk

"As it stands now, I'm not sure if any of the published mintage figures can be trusted to be "final" mintage numbers. The Mint is "Authorized" to continue minting/selling each of the designs until the Max mintage is reached...or until the end of the entire program (sometime in 2016)."

Is this true? If so, how would one go about getting an issue that is supposedly closed? The back door of the mint?

Back in 1933 a fellow with connections and a coin/jewelry store close by the PHILLI MINT did grab 10 1933 SAINTS and put them in his safe.

They did not come from the front door - and GUESS who has them NOW recently slabbed by NGC -

Yep, you are too smart - the US GOVY for the second court case on the FIFTH amendment so to speak...
