Default Anyone interested in purchasing iridium coins?

I've always wanted an iridium coin. Sadly, they don't exist.

However, I'm making some inquiries into purchasing some triple 9 iridium coin blanks.

I expect to receive laughter from the refiners. That's okay. I don't mind.
Worst that can happen is the inquiry goes nowhere.

Iridium goes for around $690 an ounce. There is no market for this commodity. You might, possibly be able to sell it to a refiner but certainly not a coin shop. Oh yeah, and the markup on such an esoteric item is probably going to be ridiculous. This is more of novelty item and not at all an investment.

Lastly, assuming I can purchase the blanks I'm not at all certain if an iridium blank will accept a stamp using conventional coin dies. Iridium, unlike gold and silver, is hard & brittle.

So, all that being said, anyone else interested in this? I'm not asking for any contractual commitments or anything. I'm just curious if theres anyone else that has some interest in iridium as a coin or at worst, a blank.

Without looking it up, what is it used for, and it sounds radioactive just by its name.

I might be interested. I have a tungsten coin blank that's loads of fun.

Iridium, for those who don't know, is the second most dense metal, next to osmium. It's extremely corrosion resistant, and is used in odd places such as specialized spark plugs.

Iridium and osmium are very close in density, like how tungsten has almost the same density as gold. Iridium is roughly twice as dense as lead:

    Osmium: 22.59 g/cm3
    Iridium: 22.56 g/cm3
    Gold: 19.30 g/cm3
    Tungsten: 19.25 g/cm3
    Lead: 11.34 g/cm3

Can I get some blanks that are 71% Iridium + 29% Lead and that are gold plated?

Edit: Never mind. Gold plated Tungsten would be cheaper.

I'd recommend contacting Fort Knox for your gold plated tungsten purchases. I'm fresh out.

Everyone has forgotten the 1980's slogan "Dinosaurs love Iridium" -

The Iridium layer (K-T) layer is the marker for the end of the Dino era - the broadly distributed layer of Iridium in soils pretty much point to an asteroid strike causing the mass die-off of the sauropods. (Not unlike the CDO/CDS layer found in and around the NY City dig site in 4500 CE [aka AD]). Documented by Wan Beeg Rat (who was genealogically related to Timothy Geitner) during her famous NY Dig of 4012-4013 AD (CE).

I wouldn't mind having a blank or coin for my element collection seeing as I have not 'filled that slot", and I don't see any iridium coins available (yet) on the Elementsales coin page. It would also have to come with an assay card or other certificate of authenticity.

There's now one company that sells iridium for investment at a reasonable commission: "Preciousmetalpurchase" out of California.

Iridium is a hole in my element collection as well. I made a nice score with samples of cesium and rubidium last year!
