that do not know squat about Facebook, Twitter, etc?
What are they used for?
What are the differences?
Benefits of one vs a another?
I would guess there are many of us who don't even know what the heck they are, let alone how to use them.
TIA

They fall into the category of "social networking" websites.
I don't subscribe to any of them...never have...but I know plenty of people who do.
Facebook is basically a personal webpage and when you sign up, you register wth an email and it automatically searches for and sends out an invite to anyone else in the facebook directory who is also in you address book. The purpose of the website is to keep in touch with people who you may not see o speak to on a regular basis - like an old friend from high school who lives across the country. For anyone who values their privacy, Facebook is not for them. The site is pretty much used to log your personal life online. It's gotten to the point now that employers actually look up prospective new hires Facebook accounts as a part of their background checks.
Twitter is sort of different. Twitter is more like an online instant messaging site but where you have followers and your own page. It's basically just a place to post messages or information. Athletes and celebreties often use Twitter to "tweet" messages to their fans.
I may be missing some of the capbilites/uss of these sights because, like I said, I don't subscribe to them, but that's my understanding.
thanks JP,
kinda wondered about it, and for the same reasons I stay away from them,
wondering how many people here participate in this phenomenon as it certainly seems popular with the younger generations,
I am still old school, as I don't even pm on the cell phone,
There was a CNN (or Yahoo) article aout 2 weeks ago about this year's incoming college freshmen. One of the things they said is that email is "old school" for them and something that they don't use. Instead, they communicate trough Facebook. The growing trend is that eventually, email will be a thing of the past and people will largely be linked through the web on these social networking sites.
There are even site now for business that are built the same way. One popular one is "linkedin".
I'm with you...I don't like em.
scorp - i'm with you. no texting, facebooking, twitting, etc..
dont even know how to text or create phone lists on cell phone. i dial every time.
that stuff is for girls![]()
I use it to look-up girls I knew in high-school and college and see how poorly (or, in rare instances, how amazingly well) they have aged! Most women will include their maiden names with their married names to make it easier to find them.
I sent my first text message last month. :-)
Also invested a small amount of money into a start up facebook like group. It will be similar to facebreak but all your personal information stays on your computer. Uses peer2peer to communicate. I invested the frn's because I like 4 young guys who are thinking outside the box. With the quality of some kids today it is refreshing.
Facebook is the greatest single intelligence gathering device known to man.
There are theories about who really funded it (CIA?), but regardless of its origins, it is far more powerful and dark than the normal user can possibly imagine. (ok maybe channeling Star Wars there, but bear with me).
Where else can .gov track your movements, with data provided completely voluntarily by you and your friends? Where else can .gov go to see all your acquaintances, what they are doing, what they are involved in, and by periphery your interests and pursuits?
Talk about a pro filer's dream data mine!
Remember the Russian Spy gal? CIA had her facebook info pronto..

I don't twit or text or any of the new things, other than I do have a facebook account. I don't list personal info there in the info section. I got it to say hello to grandkids sometimes. I don't go there alot. But if you guys think you are hiding you are nutz. If you are online, anyone can find anything... just don't give personal info on the web. My pic on facebook is Father Guido. The grandkids use it to play games and I stop in and check in with them to chat occasionally. Their mom's keep a tight eye on them too. They don't say anything mom don't see and they know it.
I've said before, I want my rights to privacy at home, and in my personal effects, but I don't worry a lot about it on line. Here there or anywhere. Krist they know me, they have my dna, my army records and medical history... they know I collect PM's... they know most of that stuff about you too if you are online. Just be careful what you say. Act like you are an open book, because you are.
PS: Bad guys... nothing I said in this post is true. Guns, ammo, obama sucks, eat me Pelosi, al gore, child molester, GWB, gay, under 12, bomb, grenade, bend over Biden... terroist.
Dass a right. I'm a Father a Guido. You doan a like it?

I don't have a Facebook page, but my pet does.![]()
Facebook is a great time waster but since I found GIM2 I don't have time for facebook
I read an interview with an old private detective and when they asked him about facebook he blew up laughing and said he cannot believe how stupid people are.
It use to take guys like him months to find out just a fraction of what people willingly post on that site.
I have no interest in facebook, if I wanted to see the folks I went to high school with all I would have to do is go to the old
bars we all hung out at. Most of them are still there.

The paranoia at gim is funny sometimes. Most of you give up more here than I give up on facebook. Some people give up a lot on Facebook. Others don't. It's like anything else on line. If you are truly worried about giving yourselves up, you wouldn't be here at an anti government, anti FRN site giving up information. You think they don't know who you are because you post under funny names?
I guess I expected a little more intelligence from this crowd. Just goes to show you...
Yeah, you guys are invisible... couldn't find you if I wanted to...
Paranoia strikes deep
into your life it will creep
starts when you're always afraid
step outta line the man come and take you away
What a crack up... the matrix is all around you, and you think you can decide which media expose you and which don't. Sorry, if you are on line you are known... if you've bought metals on line you are known. I suppose you don't have an address and don't have power or phone or... they know all about all of you at will.
Of more concern on facebook is what you let your kids post... predators of kids are more of a worry than government agents...
BUT... you guys are a hoot non the less.

I think a lot of people get out of control on facebook Wampum. My wife has shown me peoples pages that show thier houses, pictures of thier kids, where they go to school, where they hang out etc.
To me it was quite shocking.

Irons,
Baaaaahhhh! Baaaaaaahhhh! Baaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

That's my point. It's up to you how much you divulge. Just like here. It's not facebook, it's people. I mean, these same people leave a trail wherever they go. It's not like FB is some supreme government plot, they just take advantage of people's stupidity, as usual. I see stuff here I can't believe people post either about their guns, gold, silver... we are no more invisible here... yeah, maybe it takes 5 minutes longer, but if the want the info, it's data mined anyway.
Yahoo chat, some people use it for business, but it's wide open too. Just don't post what you consider private and one place is no worse than another. Most people I see on facebook play friggin games and brag about their scores... obnoxious but doesn't tell me much about them.
Typical woman on facebook:
"Woke up early today... needed 3 cups of coffee." "my hubby is the best"
pfffft... don't give close personal info, and it's no more problem than anything else.

For instance: What's the difference if Roy and Julie post their trip to Montana on facebook or at a blog? I've seen several people at gim talk about their blog... no less harmful than facebook... treat it all like someone is recording it... because they are. If that freaks you out for god's sake, don't be on the internet. Or... don't post nitty gritty type ****.
