I have lived with minorities as well, nearly married one, my best friend from the air force is one. My experience is at least as telling as yours.
I grew up in a VERY racist community and learned to hate it, never understood it. And it is clear I have a much better grasp of what is acceptable behaviour from an adult if you believe it's okay to call black people monkey's.

I'm a fiscal republican and a social liberal, my money gets my vote most of the time.
