Decided to expand on the " A New Shipping Season On The Lakes (2015) " thread and include all forms of watercraft (pleasure boats, merchant ships, naval vessels, etc.) So if you're into boats and or ships feel free to post what ever you'd like (stories, articles, pics, vids, etc,)

Hope you enjoy the thread :beerglass:

Thought this would be a good start..............

Video of my single-handed voyage across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to St.Martin in February 2011. 3120nm in 21 days and 4 hours. Read more about my voyage on www.gudrunv.com

As some have commented, it was not especially smart to not wear life jacket & click in to jack lines at all times. I agree. Please do wear life jackets and click in. Also don't pee over the railing, it's how most sailors fall into the water.

And here's the video of my next ocean crossing, the Pacific: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36rhL2.... This time not alone, but with my fiancee. Very different experience :-)

In this short documentary, Martin Machado tried to answer some of the common questions that he usually gets about shipping. "The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on my six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. Thanks for watching."

Summer Holiday's: Sailing our Hunter Europa 19 from Shetland to Norway for a short cruise, and back to Shetland over 2 weeks. Lucked out with the weather with lots of sunshine and great sailing conditions. A wee bit of fog to keep us on our toes during both legs of the crossing, not so sexy without a radar reflector onboard...

The homemade horizontal axis windvane self-steering worked a treat, the key seems to be the adjustment and securing of the tiller with slight lee helm or weather helm depending on the point of sail, while the trim tab on it's own steers the boat, just as on David Blagdons H19 'Very Willing Griffin'.

Here is episode 6 of Wicked Salty! DISCLAIMER!! No sailing is involved in this video. Just an update on what I have been going through since the boat was purchased. There were problems with the fresh water pump and the engine was leaking coolant and the boat needed to be registered in MA. Just showing some of the real things you go through in this whole process, not trying to glorify anything but give a real feel to these experiences. I promise you the next episode will be really entertaining, whether it was for me or not ;P I've said enough. Enjoy! Like, comment, subscribe!

Here is episode 7 of Wicked Salty! In this episode we experience the most engine problems yet and had to take some emergency procedures/stops as it was overheating. In hindsight the rolling furler should have been ready to get unfurled, even having the main sail ready to go but dropping the anchor was the next best thing. I have learned a ton of things about this engine from these problems, so I'm glad they happened before we were going.

Ant Steward, Around the world alone, in an open boat.
    (Rob Voerman)

    https://youtu.be/1QkZN35RZfU

    Published on Feb 20, 2013
Ant Steward circumnavigated the world on a rather small open boat called "Zulu Dawn" but named "NCS Challenger" for the voyage.

He had nowhere to build his boat and talked a friend into letting him do it inside his apartment. Getting it into and out of the apartment must have been an interesting exercise. Resin smells and woodwork noises in the early hours eventually led to an enforced removal to Royal Cape Yacht Club, where she spent the last couple of months before launching.

He left Cape Town amid warm farewells from hundreds of people. Many expected to never see him again and talked of his foolishness. He said that if we thought that he was mad we should get to know his mother, then we would know where he got it from. He had decided that he was sane and the rest of us were crazy for staying behind. It would have been a crowded boat if we had not.

by Anthony Steward, "Dudley Dix is one in a million. He was brave enough to develop and design a hull for this type of voyaging. He is a great designer( I survived) and he is a great teacher and listener. Also a very humble gracious person."

Here is episode 10 of Wicked Salty! My apologies in advance for the wind noise, we are trying to fix the shakiness and wind noise, but keep in mind this footage was shot before the solutions were made. In this episode we recover from our beating out in the open ocean. After retreating into the Sakonnet River, we improvise and take a safer inland approach to Newport Harbor. We also discover how nice reefing is... This was also the start of our re-provisioning experience, fueling up, topping off water tanks, throwing out trash and utilizing the resources at the fuel dock as well as our life living on the hook from place to place. We never pay for moorings or slips, rather just pick up derelict moorings because it's late in the season and dropping our anchor from place to place.

Marine GeoGarage is the first nautical chart web portal in the Cloud. The website allows to freely view seamless georeferenced nautical raster chart layers issued from different Hydrographic Services (NOAA US, Linz NZ , DNH Brazil) upon Google Maps imagery.
Additional free features are available for the user (voyage planning, waypoint and route monitoring with transfer to GPS, bearing and distance calculations).

OpenSeaMap.org (OSeaM) is a free nautical chart. It's a worldwide Wiki-project and part of OpenStreetMap. Everybody can contribute his nautical knowledges about estuary, harbours and Marina, as geografic chart informations and as textdata in a linked Wiki-port pilot book. OpenSeaMap covers worldwide all seas and the inland waterways. The chart shows lights, buoys, harbour informations and a lot of other nautical geo-data. The chart displays also weather informations like wind, air pressure, wave hight on a detailed worldwide weather chart including a weather forecast for three days.

TeamSurv creates charts using crowd sourced data. Boats log GPS and depth sounder information (plus compass heading and sea surface temperature when available) as they go about their nortmal activities, and upload the data to the server where the data undergoes quality checks and is corrected for tide height, speed of sound and other factors before being used to create a chart. Data can be collected using a hardware logger or through a number of software packages, and is open to all. Processed data can be viewed at the teamsurv.eu web site, overlaid on top of Google Maps.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is now offering complete detailed nautical charts for free download for home printing for the entire US coast. The charts are continuously updated. This should improve the safety at sea, while reducing costs for mariners. Note, however, that these print-at-home charts will typically not offer the detail that "full size" NOAA charts do.

Here is episode 12 of Wicked Salty! In this episode we set out of Newport Harbor to reach our next destination of Stonington, Connecticut. We get a very pleasant surprise of spotting some dolphins in the distance so we caught up to them, to have them swim with our boat. We also saw a few sights along the way such as Taylor Swifts' home and had a great sail overall. Sorry for the typo I got distracted.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface...

A Surface Effect Ship (SES) or Sidewall Hovercraft is a watercraft that has both an air cushion, like a hovercraft, and twin hulls, like a catamaran. When the air cushion is in use, a small portion of the twin hulls remain in the water. When the air cushion is turned off ("off-cushion" or "hull borne"), the full weight of the vessel is supported by the buoyancy of the twin hulls.

The SES has two advantages over a hovercraft for open sea operation: it is more resistant to slipping sideways when acted on by air or sea, and it can use water jets for propulsion since the inlet nozzles are always covered by water...

    United States Navy

The United States Navy initiated the SES model test program in 1960. By 1963, a 10-ton test craft called the XR-1 was designed and built to test the surface effect concept. The first version of the XR-1 used fixed plywood seals at the fore and aft ends of the captured air bubble section. A jet engine providing 1700 pounds of thrust was used for main propulsion. A separate 110 horsepower (82 kW) gas engine was used to drive lift fans, and also to power out-drive units that were used for off-cushion slow-speed maneuvering. During the first year of testing, the XR-1 was fitted with more powerful main propulsion and flexible fore and aft seals were tested as well.

The XR-1 was also used to test the concept of water-jet propulsion. The ship was modified in 1964 and equipped with gas turbine engines driving the water jet propulsors. The ship's weight increased to 17 tons.

    Rohr Industries 1970 to 1980

Rohr Industries became involved in SES history in 1970, taking over the XR-1 test program for the Navy. Rohr continued to use the XR-1 to test propulsion and seal concepts. Their eventual goal was to develop a 3000 ton SES capable of utilizing vertical launch missile systems and anti-submarine helicopters. The proposed ship was to be capable of 80 knots in sea-state 6 conditions. The proposed main power units were to be 4 40,000hp gas turbine engines driving water jet propulsors. The 3000 ton ship development contract was canceled in 1980.

Two experimental SESs (the SES100A and 100B), both of around 100 tons, with 80 ft (24 m) length and 40 ft (12 m) beams, were developed for the US Military in the 1960s and 70s. They both attained speeds in excess of the program goal of 80 knots (150 km/h). The SES 100B, was built by Bell Aerospace (Textron Corporation) at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility. Driven by 2 semi-submerged, supercavitating controllable, reversible propellers, achieved speeds in excess of 96 knots (approximately 110 mph) in the Gulf outside St. Andrews Bay in Panama City, Florida.

The speed was verified by the USAF ARIS radar. It also fired the Navy's first vertically launched missile (an SM-2) while doing 60 knots (110 km/h). It was also used to test automatic ride control and high speed collision avoidance and navigation systems. The 100A ship was used to test waterjet propulsion, variable geometry inlets and automatic ride control systems. The 100A and 100B were both capable of operating almost completely out of the water on an air cushion with only 18in (46 cm) of sidewall, the propellers or the waterjet inlets entering the water. The 100 ton SES 100B was built for the US Navy as a 1/10 scale model to test the feasibility of using hovercraft and other Surface Effect Ships in combat situations. The top-secret specifications called for a ship capable of entering a combat zone at a speed of over 80 knots (150 km/h) and disgorging a tank and 100 soldiers onto a beach, turning back out onto water and escaping at high speed.

Unlike the hard sidewall SES's, the full skirted AALCs, JEFF A&B were the prototype vehicles for the LCAC's used by the Navy with such success in the Persian Gulf War...
