From $250,000 to less than $10,000 coin.
"More money then brains!"Unbelieveable how many coin collectors have used "BRASSO" or like cleaners on their coins to improve the look....coins should not even be cleaned with any agent/chemical. Sometimes esp. with hoard material, experts will carefully separate the coins, remove soil deposits....but again these are EXPERTS. Here is a very rare scyphate AV pagoda found buried in S. India.
I have a story that even tops that. In 1922, Arras/Belgium, somw work found a hoard of late Roman artifacts. There were pieces of jewellery, 300 gold coins. Well, legend states that there were 2 Roman 100 Aurei coins (20 oz. gold coins) They took them to a antique dealer, who was an idiot. This guy declared that they were fakes, and that under Belgian law"that was a crime" So, they were melted down for the gold content! Today, they would be worth 10 Million EUROS each or more. Thankfully, the rest were recovered and are still around today, one is in my collection. All these coins were part of a Roman noblemans collection, and were perfect quality! There were many larger multiples like 5 aurei/10 aurei coins. Here is mine...
