Was sitting inside with my brother watching TV and I see my brother come inside and a few seconds I hear a knock at the door. My brother went to the door and I hear "Can I talk to you for a second? Please open the door" I didn't realize it was the police at first, then I heard him lock the door and say "No you cannot come inside".

At that point I took over, I was sitting on the couch and turned around and asked through an open screened window "What is the problem officer?" He asked me to open the door to come inside and i said "no, I can hear you fine" He told me he had an anonymous tip that there was a 4 foot marijuana plant growing in the back yard. I said "OK" and he asked if he could go take a look. I said "I do not consent to any searches of my property."

There was also another officer next to him running the plate on my motorcycle on the porch. That officer did not say one word the whole time.

He asked my my name "because he had to fill out paperwork for the call" and I gave him my name.

He also said he wanted to give me his card and I instructed him to leave it on the table on the porch. He seemed a little surprised about the whole interaction but was surprisingly calm and decent about it.

I watched as they each went back to separate marked cars, waited for a couple minutes and drove off.

I know who made the anonymous call.

My brother came inside and locked the door because he was out on the front porch and when he saw two police cars pull up, he knew to come inside and lock the door immediately.

I am sure I could have handled this different, but it seemed to work out well, and the outcome was satisfactory for me, ant gave my brother and I something to talk about the past hour.

We have both watched many youtube videos, sitting out on the front porch, right where the cops were standing, about how to handle police coming to your home.

What caused the LEO's to knock on your door. I know what you said, is that an excuse for some other reason? Generally there is some real reason.

If you do have a pot plant, then I guess that must be it.

They were responding to an "anonymous tip", like I said earlier.

    I know who called them.

I am not going to get into whether there was or was not a plant in my back yard.

    That is not the point.

As a long time stoner myself I know the situation very well. If they don't have a warrant they can't do anything without enough probable cause.

My dad got his ba in criminal justice from FIU just so he knew his rights for situations like this.

Its funny when they ask to search my car I deny them and make them bring the dog. Afterwards I laugh at them for wasting tax payers dollars. Then they laugh back at me.

The reason they can't even find anything is because their a bunch of imbeciles looking for a few grams of pot. They are my control group for my experiments.

And she shut his cell phone off earlier today because he refused to pay the bill.

You should totally get rid of the pot plant now. At least move it off your property. It is possible for them to get a warrant within a few hours time. I wouldn't even doubt they are still watching you.

Seemingly obvious(?) that if a neighbor had turned you in for a pot plant it would be because they had seen a pot plant in your back yard, which they then would have invited the police inside their yard to observe your backyard as well. In which case the police would have been breaking down your door instead of knocking! An odor or mere suspicion, not so likely. Unfortunately nowadays even an anonymous tip is good enough for a search warrant, so they had next to nothing!

Police never make mistakes? People never make false claims to Police officers?

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Are you a remote viewer? Why don't you use that skill for something productive instead of worrying about what people do in the privacy of their own homes? Here's an idea for you, go remote view how much gold is really inside Fort Knox for us...

I'd get rid of the plant and anything else that could be considered illegal. Ya don't know...........the cops could come back with a warrant. FWIW.........they could also watch you for a while in the hopes of catching ya doing something they could arrest you for. They are one group of people I don't trust one bit.

You handled the situation well. I'm not so sure I would have even given them my name, though. Never, ever open the door for a knock and talk. I would also get my video running. Authorities are not there to do you any good.

I'm curious, what state are you in?

By willingly remaining outside the door I wouldn't think they thought they had "reasonable suspicion", at least not that which would stand up in court. Which is of course the number one reason to never open your door, because it gives them the opportunity to make something up.

As a good defender of freedom I'm sure chewy is practicing the science of observing domestic enemy operations by watching the t.v. show "Cops". How else can someone learn what the enforcement arm of the enemies of the Republic look for as behavior not conforming the the rest of the ruled.

As for the op, about 15 years back while in law school (third year student) I was also the apartment building manager for the university. The building had 50 or so units, mostly 1 bedrooms, some two bedroom (like I had). Most of the student/residents were single graduate students, some grad and undergrad married students, one or two single parents with a child or two.

It was the Monday of the second week of fall finals (mid-December). I stayed up until 5 a.m. writing a paper. Around 10 a.m. I was woken up by pounding on the front door. It was Barry, the director of all university real estate (my boss) with some other guy. I opened the door and Barry introduced the guy as Officer Friendly of the local police squad who had questions for me but he (Barry) said I was the last person he would think of doing anything wrong. Officer Friendly asked if they could step inside. "No thank you, we can talk out out here" I replied.

"But this is some embarrassing stuff and it's better if we talked about it inside," the kind officer said.

"No we can talk about it out here," as I started to play the role of ice hockey goalie as the officer tried to squirm his way passed me first to the the left, then right door jam, going high and low. All the while I'm thinking, 'WTF, I've got the master key to all the apartments, is somebody's stereo stolen, some female resident raped????' I'm glad Barry was there to witness me playing the game of invisible hockey with the city's finest. Then I became aware of a friend - fellow resident - law student, Nancy, standing off to the side (I later learned Barry's secretary Betty tried to call me - my phone was just disconnected, long story - then she called Nancy to try to give me a heads up.)

Well, Officer Friendly finally realized that he wasn't going to win a game of invisible ice hockey against a third year law student. (Yeah, I was thinking this cop's got to be crazy asking a third year law student if he could just invite himself in.) So he said the cop shop drug task force team received a report that I was dealing drugs and growing wacky-tabacky in my bedroom window. I was like, wtf. All the while Barry saying he couldn't believe it. I asked where the report came from and he said somebody called Crime Stoppers and reported I was growing wacky-tabacky and there was a lot of foot traffic to and from my apartment. Heavy foot traffic to the FVCKING building manager's apartment door - how FVCKING odd is that?

Officer Friendly was insistent that the Crime Stoppers report would remain open and active if he couldn't verify I wasn't growing anything illegal in my bedroom window. One grand flying fvck is what I was willing to give the officer. So they started to leave. But I thought I could invite Barry in to have a look around. So that's what I did. Barry asked Officer Friendly if he (Barry) looked around and reported that I was not doing anything illegal would Friendly take his word and write the report off as unfounded. The officer agreed to this. (Being the university real estate point man Barry had always cooperated with the local constabulary in drug cases involving students and/or university property. He later told me I was the first case that the cops walked away empty handed.)

Barry entered my apartment. The officer allowed the screen door to hit him in the ass. I told the city's finest to take a step back onto the walkway and allow the screen door to close. The officer declined my invitation. I took the heavy wooden door slamming it closed with a bang I'm sure echoed back from the dorms two blocks away.

Barry immediately said somebody really had my number and every thing was b.s. I showed Barry my bedroom and the closet then the smaller bedroom I had my computer in. Both bedrooms had a western exposure. In the window of the second bedroom I had three clay pots with oregano, cilantro, and chives growing. Yes, I said oregano, cilantro, and chives. I showed Barry each pot. He looked at the one with cilantro and said he always wondered what it was because his wife used it her cooking. He tasted it to confirm it was cilantro. I pointed out the dead plant in the corner that looked like a saguaro cactus was the remains of a hot pepper plant (that produced some of the finest smokin' peppers early that year).

We returned to Officer Friendly. Barry reported that the only thing I had growing in my bedroom window was oregano, cilantro, and chives handing the good officer a sample of each. A look of disgusted disappointment overcame the plain-clothes man in blue. He took the samples and tossed them over his shoulder. A cop littering imagine that. As Barry and Officer Friendly began to walk away the officer got on his police walkie-talkie and said, "Two-four-six, clear."

I stepped out of my apartment and said, "Telling your back-up your bust is a complete bust, uh?"

"No, I don't need backup," came Friendly's smart reply.

So comes the end of my little cop knock and talk, adventure. There's more I could add, like who called and such, but that would take dozen more paragraphs. However on a side note, if you're ever an apartment building manager for or near a university and you have an cute foreign exchange student move into your building just remember this: notwithstanding the fact that this cute female who stands 5'-5" and weighs 105 lbs. of northern Russian decent with big blue eyes has fiancé back home who's the son of a big shot 4-star general in one of the former Soviet Republics and sat on the Soviet's version of the Joint Chief of Staff before for fall of the evil empire, and whose love is represented by a huge moon-sized diamond on ring-finger of this Russian beauty's left hand, make sure you tell her you love having a glass of fresh orange juice about 10:30 p.m. or so as it relaxes you for a good night sleep. Trust me like magic she will appear at your door promptly at 10:30 p.m. looking for a glassful of refreshing orange juice and won't mind a bit if you add some real relaxing Russian vodka. You'll recognize her by the big smile on her face as the scent of her perfume that drives you absolutely nuts fills your nostrils. She'll be wearing a near see-through pink nightie, a matching pink thong, pink slippers with bows on them and a pink ribbon in her hair... And don't worry if after you pour the nightcaps for you and your guest, you turn around from the kitchen area with the glasses of refreshment in your hands you see her holding her pink nightie in her right hand. Go with the flow. She had discussion with her fiancé about drinking orange juice while studying in the U.S. :knuddel:

we do not pay our cops to chase down anonymous tips for something that silly, maybe if there was murder and someone called in a name, they would ck it out.
