Russian Spy Numbers Broadcast-Station E06 Mary Johnson Shortwave Listener Published on Jan 5, 2017 This station was at a somewhat unusual frequency relative to its usual schedule. It also had a stronger carrier then I've previously witnessed. It therefor could be a clever pirate, a western European sound alike intended to confuse spies, or dummy broadcasts for tests. A radio broadcast known as a "Numbers Station" Numbers stations transmit encrypted information to agents in the field. The numbers broadcast can only be decoded by the agent that has the right encryption key. Although we can track where they are broadcast from, its impossible to track who is listening. This station is part of a larger family of related stations operated by Russia, with transmitter sites across eastern Europe.
