I've got this old High Standard, J.C. Higgins Model 66, Supermatic "Deluxe" 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun. I know that the value is such that I'm not gonna get rich selling it and I don't skeet shoot or bird hunt. So, I have this idea to have the barrel cut down to the minimum "legal" length for personal protection. I've heard that that length is 18", is that correct?

    Thanks

Maybe then, I'll see if my local gun shop would want to make a trade.

Thing about that Higgins is nostalgic value I suppose. You can buy 'em all day for under 150, but they are a bygone and usually work fine with a little care. Higgins made lots of stuff for sears. As kids we used to call 'em "Junk Crummy" Higgins, but I think that's just because they weren't a main brand name, but a store brand. Their stuff was good for the price I think.

It just didn't roll off the tongue like Winchester or Remington or even Schwinn for bycicles.

You can probably find a short bbl for one if you're willing to look hard enough, then you can have both.

As to the original question, BATF measures from the bolt face to the end of the bbl, 18". If you cut one, cut it to 18.5 or so, so if you mess it up a little you won't be in trouble.

The legal length would depend on which state you live in.

18" is the minimum shotgun barrel length as set by the BATF.(this is a Federal law that superseeds state firearm statues)
SBRs/NFA require $200 ATF tax stamps and engravings are required on the firearm.

Make sure you measure down inside the barrel using a wooden dowel or metal rod, parallel to the bore, to the face of the closed, cocked bolt. Overall length should be greater than 26". I would not go under 18 1/2" on the barrel just to be sure.

18' federal your state law will vary usually adding an overall length. RED nice thought but it does not happen that way, fold up or collapseable is illegal in many states, on top of barrel length.

    18 ft. federal?...:23_28_100s:
As I stated previous 18" is the minimum legal shotgun barrel length in the US.
as LukeNM stated 26" for an overall length of a firearm.

Legal barrel length has nothing to do with stocks, pistol grips, folders etc. Those "Evil features" have to do with the 1994 AWB.

BARREl length is not for individual states interpretation its BATF mandated.
    I'll say it again,(for shotguns) 18" barrel length & 26" overall.
