Federal Reserve Announces Day of Issue of Redesigned $100 NoteThe Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday announced that the redesigned $100 note will begin circulating on October 8, 2013. This note, which incorporates new security features such as a blue, 3-D security ribbon, will be easier for the public to authenticate but more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate.
The new design for the $100 note was unveiled in 2010, but its introduction was postponed following an unexpected production delay. To ensure a smooth transition to the redesigned note when it begins circulating in October, the U.S. Currency Education Program is reaching out to businesses and consumers around the world to raise awareness about the new design and inform them about how to use its security features. More information about the new design $100 note, as well as training and educational materials, can be found at www.newmoney.gov

I was wondering when these were coming out to circulation.
    Wasn't it originally 2008?

Well, this will give the North Koreans something else to do, instead of working on nuclear annihilation of the US! Good idea.

    What a fraud.

As if this new "money" is somehow backed by gold. Or a gold-leafed inkwell. Or even a well of gold ink.

    Or even a feather quill..[IMG]

    But it sure is purdy

Theoretically speaking, if one held a small stash of old $100 notes, should one exchange them for the new ones?

Theoretically speaking, one would exchange them for about 4 Silver American Eagles apiece. :cheerful:

Want to solve the debt crisis?

After introduction and widespread distribution place a notice that all old style $100's will be demonetized within 6 months.

All 100's entering back into the system will have to be explained as to how you got them if they are in quantity. If they are not turned in, they become worthless and the Fed gets to write off the amount outstanding and negates the value of the "debt".

Voila, fixed system all while putting the boots to the people who prefer cash outside the banking system.

Damn, I should get a job in government, that is just evil enough to work.

If the old $100 bills are still valid currency then how does the new bill prevent counterfiting?
Someone could just fake an old style $100 bill. :hmpf:

The old ones will be pulled from circulation by the banks. Same thing they did with our old 500s and 1000s.

So I guess they found an automated way to sort all those bills so the defective ones could be removed??? That's if the story below from 2010 was even true. I don't see how they produced more than a billion of them before noticing there was a problem. I think something stinks about the story.

The Fed Has a $110 Billion Problem with New Benjamins
    Published: Tuesday, 7 Dec 2010 | 1:38 PM ET
    http://www.cnbc.com/id/40521684

    excerpt:
Because officials don’t know how many of the 1.1 billion bills include the flaw, they have to hold them in the massive vaults until they are able to develop a mechanized system that can sort out the usable bills from the defects.

Sorting such a huge quantity of bills by hand, the officials estimate, could take between 20 and 30 years. Using a mechanized system, they think they could sort the massive pile of bills, each of which features the familiar image of Benjamin Franklin on the face, in about one year.

Doesn't matter how purdy or ugly or fancy they make 'em, they're still belief-based fiat.

First thing that came to my mind when I saw the picture of the "new" hundred dollar bill was this:

"Meet the new bill... same as the old bill..."

Re: New $100.00 dollar bill to be released.+

But but, some think it important to have some old notes for unforeseen transitional period that will likely occur. Merchants are not all of a sudden going to take PM's in exchange for goods, IMHO. Not to mention, many including moi, think it not a bad strategy to keep dry powder on hand in the event of a the almost certain market crash to come which could likely take down PMs even further as it did 2007-08. ???

Another option I considering is changing them into $20 notes since there is now so much suspicion surrounding all $100 notes. It's just that storage becomes a problem with $20s.

Theoretically speaking, having too many 20s to store conveniently would be a really nice problem to have.

My current house doesn't have an attic, but theoretically one could stash a boatload of cash underneath a blanket of fiberglass insulation.

Re: New $100.00 dollar bill to be released.+

One might theoretically feel the need to be able to grab the alleged stash and haul ass in case of fire or other emergency. Under insulation in attics does not seem to be a handy or secure solution.

It would seem that the scary part of hoarding a stash of greenbacks might be that in today's cartoon world, any such alleged stash is automatically considered tainted drug profits or other such convenient excuses for confiscation.

Ye ol' post hole digger may still be best solution for such paranoia, some say.

BTW: anyone catch the first episodes of "Backyard OIL"? New series of southern Kentucky rednecks drilling and finding oil on their property, turning them into instant millionaires. One of the characters was shown digging up a mason jar containing 20K cash for his next drill hole. He said, "I don't believe in banks". LOL, god bless his soul.
