Bernstein is referring to Operation Mockingbird, a CIA campaign started in the 1950s to plant intelligence reports among reporters at more than 25 major newspapers and wire agencies, who would then regurgitate them for a public oblivious to the fact that they were being fed government propaganda.

In some instances, as Bernstein shows, members of the media also served as extensions of the surveillance state, with reporters actually carrying out assignments for the CIA.

Executives with CBS, the New York Times and Time magazine also worked closely with the CIA to vet the news. Bernstein writes: “Other organizations which cooperated with the CIA include the American Broadcasting Company, the National Broadcasting Company, the Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps?Howard, Newsweek magazine, the Mutual Broadcasting System, the Miami Herald and the old Saturday Evening Post and New York Herald?Tribune.”

    From the Zero Hedge article;

This use of propaganda disguised as journalism is what journalist John Pilger refers to as “invisible government… the true ruling power of our country.”

True, but propaganda is generally viewed as overt. I'd say the majority of people will struggle with the idea that it has been such a complete media take over and such a covert part of their daily lives. This election will have changed many minds, however I would say that many more need changing... still far too many trust MSM way too much. JMO

I think if propaganda is done well, most people have no idea that its propaganda. It can be as simple & innocuous as just omitting a few important facts. Finally, many are waking up to accepting that we have been fooled for so long & are having growing pains in how to accept that fact & how to let go of beliefs formed by propaganda. I think that is what we are witnessing lately. The internet has been a game changer for sure. It has become much easier to seek facts based on a variety of sources, but first we must have the inclination to do so & then the wisdom to search with an open mind.

For sure but would you rather there be fewer sources? I dont know how old you are but I grew up with just a few channels over the air & a few local papers for news.

And yes, the list is as ridiculous as that sounds. Join me today as I look into the latest pathetic attempt by a flailing establishment to bolster their discredited mouthpiece media organs and counter the ascendant alternative media. I don't trust ANY media these days. That being said, I use Google's search engine. Because I'm not a dummy I can get around pretty much any censorship they try and cutely put into place. I can't speak for the dummies in the world who can't think beyond a single typed thought and are bound by whatever Google puts in front of their face.

I saw that interview on Tucker Carlson's show (awesome new show by the way). Couldn't believe that the Newsweek political editor would come on and admit to the fact that a magazine with their name on it was not even seen by anyone at their offices prior to release. And he said that third party contractors regularly print commemorative issues for them. Why they would allow some third party contractor to publish under their banner without so much as a proof-reading is one thing. But to then come out and admit it is quite another.

When the current owners bought Newsweek for $1 (not just one copy but the whole deal) a couple of years ago, they must have taken the editorial staff in the deal too. Me thinks they paid too much.

We've all been reading about the state-run media's new pet narrative; the "war on fake news" that is fully endorsed by the establishment and corporate globalists. After "reporting" rigged election polls and biased election coverage in the sound defeat of Hillary, the state-run media has been refused, refuted and repudiated by the general public en masse...subscriptions and ratings are at an all-time low. The state-run media is being rejected in favor of these smaller operations that are in defense of truth and liberty, even if their product is not overly polished. Peeps have had enough of the state-run media lies, the fake news, the false flags, race-baiting, and globalist narrative and are seeking alternative sources for "news." The globalist game of controlling the narrative is failing. People are no longer given objective information to think for themselves, but merely to be told how to think. The globalist purveyors of fake news (All 4 major TV networks, plus the cable networks such as CNN, MSNBC, plus print media such as NYT, WAP, Reuters, plus internet and social media outlets like google, twitter and facebook) have now taken it upon themselves to determine what is fake news and what is not according to their "standards." This is full blown, communist censorship of our First Amendment rights.

This thread is dedicated to exposing the state-run media for the shills they are, please post pertinent articles as you find them. The following are snippets and links to articles on this topic.

    From Bionic Mosquito:

From a letter to readers of the New York Times (by the NY Times):

As we reflect on this week’s momentous result, and the months of reporting and polling that preceded it, we aim to rededicate ourselves to the fundamental mission of Times journalism. That is to report America and the world honestly, without fear or favor, striving always to understand and reflect all political perspectives and life experiences in the stories that we bring to you.

    Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., Publisher
    Dean Baquet, Executive Editor

    Reply from Bionic Mosquito:

Mr. Sulzberger Jr. and Mr. Baquet,

Some of these topics will provide several months’ worth of daily investigate reports; all will provide opportunities for at least one week or more of daily reports. The Times would see its readership reach highs not seen since before the invention of the internet.

The narrative that you have so faithfully supported for several decades, at the cost of reporting “honestly,” is coming apart. Although some saw this with the events of September 11, the first overt sign was delivered with the financial crisis of 2008 and the government’s reaction to this – ongoing even today. You missed a big sign with Ron Paul’s candidacy in 2008 and 2012. The most recent sign – prior to last Tuesday – was delivered with the Brexit vote.

You need not wait for the next opportunity “to report America and the world honestly, without fear or favor…” You can begin today, by working your way right down this list.

“The goal of search is to provide the most relevant and useful results for our users,” Andrea Faville, a Google spokeswoman, said in a statement. “In this case, we clearly didn’t get it right, but we are continually working to improve our algorithms.”

Facebook has long spoken of how it helped influence and stoke democratic movements in places like the Middle East, and it tells its advertisers that it can help sway its users with ads. Facebook reaches 1.8 billion people around the globe, and the company is one of the largest distributors of news online. A Pew Research Center study said that nearly half of American adults rely on Facebook as a news source.

    Mainstream Media Goes Full McCarthyite
    By Hunter Lewis

"Senator Joe McCarthy perfected the technique in the United States: whenever you disagree with anybody, don’t debate ideas, go right into name calling. In McCarthy’s day, the epithet of choice was “Communist.” In recent years, it has morphed into “racist, sexist, homophobe, latinophobe, Islamophobe, xenophobe etc., etc.”

There were Communists in McCarthy’s day, which made his technique seem to work for a while. Richard Nixon was accused of being a McCarthyite because he thought State Department employee and Georgetown upper crust favorite Alger Hiss was a Stalinist agent, but eventually Soviet records confirmed that Hiss was indeed a Stalinist agent. Because there are racists and sexists in our society, it makes it easier to try to destroy people with these epithets whether they fit or not.

Today’s NPR Evening Edition discussed some recent Trump appointments. Senator Jeff Sessions, Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, was described as a racist. Anybody with any familiarity with Sessions knows that this is a complete falsehood. He isn’t remotely a racist.

NPR made no effort to balance any of these blatant McCarthite lies and insinuations. It is ironic. The media won plaudits from historians for going after McCarthy when most politicians feared to confront him. For years, there was no greater smear word among left journalists than McCarthyite. And now it is they who are practicing it and won’t give it up.

Perhaps the only way to make the mainstream media reconsider is for consumers to complain to their advertisers. (Yes, NPR has advertisers.) That might get their attention. Evidently the credibility they have lost with such infantile behavior does not bother them.

Julian Assange — ‘Google is Not What it Seems’ — They ‘Do Things the CIA Cannot’

Julian Assange cautioned all of us a while back, in the vein of revelations similar to those provided by Edward Snowden, that Google — the insidious search engine with a reputation for powering humanity’s research — plays the dark hand role in furthering U.S. imperialism and foreign policy agendas.

“If the future of the internet is to be Google,” Assange noted, “that should be of serious concern to people all over the world—in Latin America, East and Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, the former Soviet Union, and even in Europe—for whom the internet embodies the promise of an alternative to US cultural, economic, and strategic hegemony.”

Empire will remain empire until its dying breath — particularly if it functions under the obstinate belief it, alone, can save the world. Julian Assange should be praised for the transparency and insight he and Wikileaks have readily given the world, instead of excoriated and blamed for faults which lie in the establishment framework — it is this political, intelligence, and military web deserving of a pointed finger.

Media Complicity Is Key to Blacklisting Websites
    By Norman Solomon

We still don’t have any sort of apology or retraction from the Washington Post for promoting “The List” — the highly dangerous blacklist that got a huge boost from the newspaper’s fawning coverage on November 24. The project of smearing 200 websites with one broad brush wouldn’t have gotten far without the avid complicity of high-profile media outlets, starting with the Post.

“Smearing is not reporting,” the RootsAction petition says. “The Washington Post’s recent descent into McCarthyism — promoting anonymous and shoddy claims that a vast range of some 200 websites are all accomplices or tools of the Russian government — violates basic journalistic standards and does real harm to democratic discourse in our country. We urge the Washington Post to prominently retract the article and apologize for publishing it.”

In media and government, the journalists and officials who enable blacklisting are cravenly siding with conformity instead of democracy.

I curse Julian Assange because he receives insider information, but he releases very little. He has his own agenda about truth. I would support him if he reported everything. But his actions are unacceptable.

That's a very presumptuous statement. We don't even know he's still alive. What information he receives he handles the way he sees fit. After all, he's holding all the cards. Whatever information he did release started the most important movement of the 21st century and finally woke enough people up to actually threaten the people who have been in complete control of everything!

This is getting better by the day...I'm loving it. Internet and media outlets small and large; left, right or indifferent are all accusing each other of fake news. It's on like Donkey Kong!

Washington Post Appends "Russian Propaganda Fake News" Story, Admits It May Be Fake

In the latest example why the "mainstream media" is facing a historic crisis of confidence among its readership, facing unprecedented blowback following Craig Timberg November 24 Washington Post story "Russian propaganda effort helped spread ‘fake news’ during election, experts say", on Wednesday a lengthy editor's note appeared on top of the original article in which the editor not only distances the WaPo from the "experts" quoted in the original article whose "work" served as the basis for the entire article (and which became the most read WaPo story the day it was published) but also admits the Post could not "vouch for the validity of PropOrNot's finding regarding any individual media outlet", in effect admitting the entire story may have been, drumroll "fake news" and conceding the Bezos-owned publication may have engaged in defamation by smearing numerous websites - Zero Hedge included - with patently false and unsubstantiated allegations.

It was the closest the Washington Post would come to formally retracting the story, which has now been thoroughly discredited not only by outside commentators, but by its own editor.

    The apended note in question:

Editor’s Note: The Washington Post on Nov. 24 published a story on the work of four sets of researchers who have examined what they say are Russian propaganda efforts to undermine American democracy and interests. One of them was PropOrNot, a group that insists on public anonymity, which issued a report identifying more than 200 websites that, in its view, wittingly or unwittingly published or echoed Russian propaganda. A number of those sites have objected to being included on PropOrNot’s list, and some of the sites, as well as others not on the list, have publicly challenged the group’s methodology and conclusions. The Post, which did not name any of the sites, does not itself vouch for the validity of PropOrNot’s findings regarding any individual media outlet, nor did the article purport to do so. Since publication of The Post’s story, PropOrNot has removed some sites from its list.

As The Washingtonian notes, the implicit concession follows intense and rising criticism of the article over the past two weeks. It was “rife with obviously reckless and unproven allegations,” Intercept reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ben Norton wrote, noting that PropOrNot, one of the groups whose research was cited in Timberg’s piece, “anonymous cowards.” One of the sites PropOrNot cited as Russian-influenced was the Drudge Report.

The piece’s description of some sharers of bogus news as “useful idiots” could “theoretically include anyone on any social-media platform who shares news based on a click-bait headline,” Mathew Ingram wrote for Fortune.

But the biggest issue was PropOrNot itself. As Adrian Chen wrote for the New Yorker, its methods were themselves suspect, hinting at counter-Russian propaganda - ostensibly with Ukrainian origins - and verification of its work was nearly impossible. Chen wrote “the prospect of legitimate dissenting voices being labelled fake news or Russian propaganda by mysterious groups of ex-government employees, with the help of a national newspaper, is even scarier.”

Criticism culminated this week when the "Naked capitalism" blog threatened to sue the Washington Post, demanding a retraction.

Now, at least, the "national newspaper" has taken some responsibility, however the key question remains: by admitting it never vetted its primary source, whose biased and conflicted "work" smeared hundreds of websites, this one included, just how is the Washington Post any different from the "fake news" it has been deriding on a daily basis ever since its endorsed presidential candidate lost the elections?
