I don't know if this is true or not, but I went to the website where you can buy tickets to watch an Olympic event at Sochi and it seems to indicate that US Citizens can NOT buy a ticket if they wanted to.

I must be wrong. But I cut and pasted this:

The Official ticketing website can be used for ticket sales for citizens of the countries below:
Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei, Burkina-Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Chinese Taipei, Congo, Cuba, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Finland, Gambia, Georgia, Greece, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iceland, Indonesia, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Oman, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé and Príncipe, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Slovakia, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Outside of Turkey it appears NATO nations or Western Europe from Germany Westward on and North America including Mexico have been overlooked. But then Red China is missing while Taipei is listed. ( So much for the BRIICS love).

I would not really buy a ticket, but I thought it was interesting to see exactly how much a pain in the ass it would be. The overall procedure makes one think that getting on a domestic, commercial air flight is a breeze, in comparison.

IF you happen to get to Sochi, and IF you actually had a ticket, you will also need a "Spectator Pass". In order to get a spectator pass is not straight forward, and you can be denied for any reason.

Much to do, over nothing !

I wouldn't go if it was free !

The Olympics was originally set up to be a non-political sports event.
If it had been left that way, none of this crap would be happening. JMHO

Actually I agree with you, and to go further, I wouldn't go if I netted $1,000. Not worth the hassle and danger.

The only reason I posted this, was to illustrate the status of how screwed things up are.

I am at a loss of how Russia spent $51 billion on the Olympics yet still don't have all the hotel rooms ready, clean running water or even enough water. Seems like they only spent $1 billion and the other $50 billion went out into bribes.

If you ever were in Russia, you would understand.

If you ever read "Don't Stop the Carnival" by Herman Wouk you might begin to grok it...
