1. Tuesday on Tap, showing some initial weakness in metals as it takes a breather from yesterday. The dollar had a rally yesterday that fizzled with no follow thru this am that may lend addn'l support. Oil is rebounding back above $30 and trying to hold above that, but it seems as though there are some determined sellers who keep attempting to put it under.

The Germans are interesting as a case study because there is definitely something about them that leads to their outperforming the rest of the continent in whatever metric you choose. I'm mostly of German heritage so I would like to think that Germanic superiority is the result of genetics but I'm convinced that the superiority is a result of a culture of the respect of knowledge, education and personal effort. Other traditional stuff too. In short, all of the values that "progressives" have told us need to be abandoned in the search of the collective ideal.

Dont forget the NaziZeit had far reaching effects on German Society, it pretty much put the cap on old established elites that had gotten a good kicking due to WWI ? And then there were the effects of Volksgemeinschaft, I imagine the numbers of former Dedicated National Socialists who wound up with directing positions in many of the industries that count, may have considered some of its elements Beneficial towards progress ?

Of course, had Henry Morganthau had his way, things could have been very different.

Then we would be the best Amish-style farmers and pay the Greeks, Spanish, Italians, soon France etc. in potatoes instead of T-Euros...

I have never been to Germany, but worked for the Weinbrenner Shoe Company (org and operated by Germans since 1886) for twenty years. It is one of only eight shoe factories still operating on American soil.

What I learned from the Germans? Don't be late for work... :vollkommenauf:

Actually, they were very good to work with and for and usually paid very well (a few were cheap skates). Had no problem with those of us who drank liquor, if we were good workers. I was a boot smith on Process 82 steel toe, a vulcanizing process perfected by German scientists pre-WWII. The Amish traveled hundreds of miles just to visit our factory and purchase only our work boots. Also Harley-Davidson and foundry workers from Milwaukee.

Married an all German farm girl, who outworked most men her age. They all had a sense of pride in who they were and I never met one who was lazy or dirty.

Also had freinds from Chicago who escaped Germany after the war and even attended 'the German club' when in the city. You could not ask for better, more trustworthy freinds who always brought the best Chicago German bakery with them every time they would visit.

Japanese are the same. Work hard. Nationalistic. But asians are not related to us nordics.

But I can't say that either Germany or Japan are fit to rule the world, bit of an ego problem mate, and they just don't always play well with others. (Britian is still more fit to rule the world, they are more open minded to other races/societies).

Otherwise, I wish half our country was German (the female part). Good beer, nice farms, good food, clean and efficient. Excellent industry. What is not to like? When they got drunk (and sometimes sober) they looked down on us non Germans. That was about it. A slight Hubris problem, but easy to overlook most days.

I don't have any knowledge of why this might be but I'll bet it has nothing to do with wizard bankers and brilliant political fiscal policies. I'd venture to guess that they don't treat sluggards like royalty and you'd better get off your behind and produce goods and services.

Amid a sea of liberal boneheads they thrive. The answer to the worlds problems are so simple and so ancient. Just live life the way God intended.

I'd guess their 'Welfare' services are more far reaching than either those of Britain or America ? Its probable that the reason that they may not have the take up that 'We' experience, is that Work tends to Pay :)

Britain, and by extension America (with its British links), by being first into the Industrial Revolution Party, has suffered from the Working classes being imbued with a Folk Memory of the Appalling terms and conditions of the early industrial world. Even today the average worker in Britain tends to begin any deliberations from the standpoint that the 'Boss's have the sole intent of ripping off the Employee's. Whilst such an opinion may in many cases be entirely fallacious, there are still a considerable number of concerns that validate such poor opinions :)

Of course, this logic breaks down completely when one includes those who might be more recently arrived in the 3 countries :)

But some take it with them, I got curious and just googled process 82.

RoSearch, who made all our equipment and chemicals at Weinbrenner, was started by Jewish scientists forced out of Germany in 1939.

Our DOD LOVED the jewish outcasts and even some of the German 'outcasts' before and after WWII.

If Germany would have kept the 'good jews' they would have Oppenhiemer and Einstien and Dr VanBraun and THEN Mr. Hitler would have nuked London and stopped the war in three days.

    Speckin de' Deutche?

(Well, he prob would have nuked Dublin, but I bet you limeys would have seen the cloud from over there)

The Germans are successful because they are net producers as opposed to net consumers.

    My take on this :-

They produce sophisticated things that Europe needs, and put the systems and logistics in place to make those things happen, usually on-time. They take pride in their work.

They can run entire factories with about 4 workers, through the use of automation. The factories can often produce many styles of similar product, removing the need for additional/wasteful production lines. They engineer things, like the Japanese do.

They produce more than they consume, as someone else has identified.

They are generally honest, hard-working, and smart with their money. They prefer order to chaos.

    Downsides :

They are often far too serious, and need to enjoy life more, and meet different people.

Few here will want to hear this, but it just might have something to do with the Rhineland model as opposed to the Anglo-Saxon model.

One of the largest reasons why they've been so successful people above have already hinted at (net exporters, they still produce stuff, etc.) and it's also the reason why Merkel is in such a tight spot. The reality is a large part of the German boom is essentially due to the Euro itself. By standardizing the currency of Europe that essentially made superior German products cheaper for all of Europe. It's a hidden subsidy of sorts that can't be understated. That's why on some level Germany has to try and salvage the Euro. Make no mistake if the Euro collapses and the Deutch mark returns most German goods will be too expensive for the rest of Europe and the Germany economy would suffer.

The German economy did well and on several occasions boomed with the Mark as well, but there is another and related point here: by lending money to Greece etc., and by bailing out several European states, the Germans were and are funding a large percentage of their their own exports...
