Thomas Delauer here - senior trainer and nutritionist for SixPackAbs.com. Today, I'm breaking down my top 3 push-up variations and giving you the science behind how these exercises work to get you into the shape you deserve to be in.

Push-ups are great since you can do them just about anywhere - at home, while traveling, at the office, or anywhere with some flat open area.

0:28 - "Body Through Space" - Whenever your body is in motion and traveling from one point to another, you are engaging the whole body and really engaging in what true fitness is all about.

1:12 - Push-Up Variation #1: Alternating Medicine Ball Roll Over Push-Ups - 10-12 Reps per side.

Start by placing a large, non-bouncy medicine ball to your left side while down in a push-up position. Place your left arm on top of the medicine ball, with the right hand planted on the floor. Complete 2 push-ups from this position, then roll the ball over to your right side and do the same. This variation is great in helping your shoulder flexibility.

3:15 - Push-Up Variation #2: Stacked Incline Bench Push-Ups - 10-12 Reps

Get a bench or elevated surface to place your feet on top of and get into a push-up position. Next, I want you to stack your feet - one on top of the other. This variation unlocks your hip flexors and makes this push-up also a core exercise. When you feel like you may be losing your balance, make a break, then place the other foot on top.

4:38 - Push-Up Variation #3 - Spiderman Push-Ups - 10-12 Reps per side.

Get into a regular push-up position. When at the bottom of the push-up, you'll then bring your left knee up to your left elbow, then rise back up to the start position. The isometric hold at the bottom utilizes time-under-tension and makes a push-up not just a chest and shoulder but core exercise as well. For an advanced version, double up the knee-to-elbow motion on each side before going back up.

These push-up variations are also designed to reduce your risk of anterior pelvic tilt that can cause unwanted lower back pain and posture issues.

Keto Increases Your Cholesterol - What to Do - Thomas DeLauer


So you might be watching this video because you went on a low carb high fat keto diet and you saw an increase in your cholesterol levels. Maybe your doctor's telling you that you're doing something terribly wrong. Maybe he's telling you you need to get off that ketogenic diet because your cholesterol levels are high. Maybe you're just scared. Maybe you're just concerned as to why they're higher, or maybe you're trying to be proactive and trying to understand why they might get higher. In this video, I'm gonna help you understand that higher levels of cholesterol on a ketogenic diet could very well mean a very, very good and rather cool thing.

You see, we have to remember that we're on a ketogenic diet. Everything is surrounding fats. We're eating a lot of fats, we're metabolizing fats, we're gonna have more lipids and we're gonna have more cholesterols in the bloodstream, plain and simple. We have to remember that. What's interesting is that higher levels of cholesterol on a ketogenic diet are being linked and associated with weight loss. Believe it or not, once weight loss starts and fatty acid metabolism really kicks in, we see an increase in cholesterol. So it usually means that you're having an influx of weight loss occurring at that very point in time.

You see, as fat starts to break down, cholesterol goes up, and it has to do with the fact that triglycerides are mobilized and they end up getting broken down into fuel but the cholesterol just kinda hangs out. The cholesterol doesn't really get burned for fuel. It's not metabolized like that. It's not energy. So what it does, it ends up sitting in the bloodstream, waiting to get recycled by the liver. It's not doing anything good or doing anything bad. It's just elevated and it's usually indicative of the fact that your body is using a little bit more fat for fuel at that very point in time.

So you will find it's a temporary increase and once the weight loss starts to plateau a little bit and starts to slow down, your cholesterol levels will probably start to come down. You've probably seen an increase in both your HDL and your LDL, and it just has to do with the fact that both of them are mobilized. On that note, we have to understand HDL and LDL and the relationship with ketosis, and once you understand this, everything's gonna make a lot more sense and I can almost guarantee you're gonna come out of this video overall feeling a lot less stressed out about this situation.

First off, HDL and LDL, they're not even cholesterols. They're transport vehicles. They deliver cholesterols. So you've got high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein. Low density lipoprotein, the "bad cholesterol" delivers nutrients. It delivers cholesterol, delivers fat and fat-soluble nutrients to the cell. Very important, but for some reason it gets a bad rap. Then we have HDL. HDL's job is to go around and pick up waste particles or used LDL, particles of LDL, and take them back to the liver for recycling. So somewhere along the lines, messages got kinda confused. For some reason we think that LDL is bad because it's delivering fat, even though it's totally important. For some reason we think that purely recycling that fat is the only good thing that should be occurring. We have to take a deeper dive. It's not the presence of LDL that is bad. It's the fact that LDL oxidizes a lot easier, and because LDL oxidizes a lot easier, it has the propensity to turn sour on us really easily.

Here's something that most people may not know... (I didn't know until doing the extra research for this video)

Almost all of the popular "agility" drills and exercises that you see... are technically NOT training agility.

They are actually training "Change Of Direction" (C.O.D.)

According to many of the articles we read such as this article from the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching... Agility & Change Of Direction are two independent skills.

The main difference between these two different skills is the addition of "Reactive Decision Making".

Change Of Direction drills do not include reactive decision making.
(example: cones, ladders, shuttle runs)

Agility drills include reactive decision making.
(example: tag, reaction races, arrow drill inside today's video)

Now what's more important... inside this same article they found no strong correlation between high performers in C.O.D. & high performers in Agility.

What this means is that just because we train C.O.D. (ladders, cones, etc.) does not mean we will see an improvement with our true Agility.

Now this doesn't mean you should stop training C.O.D.

Change Of Direction drills are still great to train as an athlete. You will experience improvements with your speed, braking ability, and performance with Change Of Direction.

It's just crucial that you also add in real agility drills that include the "Reactive Decision Making" if you want to see an improvement with your actual agility.

That's why in today's video you get 3 drills in total. 2 Change Of Direction drills and 1 Agility drill.

For the change of direction drills you will be use exercises based off of the extensive research in this article from "Strength & Conditioning Research" (which reviews multiple studies).

It was shown that athletes that perform the best in COD drills were proven to have faster braking, better balance, quicker acceleration and they also on average had more knee flexion and hip flexion, meaning they would get lower to the ground. -

High-intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.) has become a popular way to burn fat in the gym, but that's not all this type of cardio training is good for. If you have access to any cardio equipment, here is a great beginner's H.I.I.T. workout that you can use.

The essential framework of high-intensity interval training is always the same: Brief, all-out work periods, separated by rest periods that you wish were just a little longer.

The work-to-rest ratio can vary from 1:1 (for example, 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off, 60s on, 60s off, etc.) to 1:4 or more, and the rounds can be just a few up to 10. But no matter how long you rest, the key is that you give it all you got.

#93 - Build Your Press with Better Programming

One common criticism of the Novice Linear Progression as detailed in Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training 3rd Edition is the lack of volume for upper body work, especially for the Press. The press is usually the first of the lifts to stall out during NLP, partly because the primary movers in the press are relatively small muscles and partly because, being a relatively technical lift, there is less margin for error than, say, the Bench Press. We all know the benefits of building a big overhead press - not to mention it's probably the coolest Big Lift, so Matt and Scott tackle this problem and offer some tips to continue building your press after LP.

The first thing to examine is form. Some trainees may elect to learn the Press 1.0 first, that is, a strict press with no hip rebound. The hip rebound relies on precise timing, and can be difficult to get right as a rank novice. So, if you are performing a strict 1.0 style press, learning the Press 2.0 technique can give you some additional room for gains. There's also the Press 1.5, a term coined by SSC Michael Wolf to describe a press in which the first rep is a 2.0 and subsequent reps are rebounded off the bottom position. The rebound out of the bottom position allows the lifter to take advantage of a stretch reflex in the triceps and lats which can help the lifter add a few pounds to their LP.

Microloading can be useful, particularly for older trainees and female trainees. However, Matt typically doesn't like to use jumps less than 2.5lbs, except in these populations.

At some point volume needs to change. Scott likes to slowly increase the total number of reps per workout by dropping the number of reps per set and increasing the number of sets. Thus, 3x5 -15 total reps- becomes 4x4 -16 reps-, then 6x3 -18 reps-, all while increasing load. Then Scott will have the lifter go back to 3x5 at the now-higher load.

Eventually frequency needs to increase as well. Matt likes to utilize the four-day split framework with two upper body days: on one day the lifter will perform heavy bench and volume work on press, on the other they will do the opposite. This increases the amount of upper work generally, while providing instances of both volume and intensity each week for each lift. Scott will walk from LP to the four-day split by simply adding extra pressing sets on a bench day. This can be done as the lifter transitions from LP to a 4-day split method.

Medial vs. Lateral Inguinal Hernia are often times referred to as direct and indirect hernias, respectively. Indeed, if you are in medical school almost no one will refer to them as medial and lateral outside of the OR, but for lit review purposes on this question much of the literature discusses medial and lateral. I suppose I was "primed" by doing this reading before making the video so...either terminology works, but I'm sticking with direct and indirect based on convention.
