I did some panning years ago and got the technique down pretty well. Just never found much gold to pan out. All the claims had been worked over pretty heavy.

I do pan the creeks here, Michigan has glacial deposit Gold but it's pretty hard to find. Also the DNR says panning in trout streams is illegal and every trickle of water around here has trout in it so you have to be sneaky. But I do try. It is fun to practice and now I know that if I do find a small Gold deposit I'll actually be able to find the Gold. Panning isn't too hard but you can miss flour Gold if you do it wrong. Flour Gold is all there is here.

We all need practice I guess.

We have friends out west and next time we go out there I plan on hitting a couple of the open panning areas in Colorado.

The orange bucket in picture 2 and 3 is where I pour off muddy water. I like to keep my panning water clear so I can see what I'm doing. I'm getting much better at getting the tiny fly poop size flour Gold separated from the black sand. I use an 11 inch Gold Catcher pan I got from the GPAA, it's the perfect size for tub panning. Last 2 pictures is total so far and Bungaman makes an appearance.

As for children panning paydirt from what I have read in the reviews they love it. Lots of folks pan paydirt as a family activity.

As long as you are using Gold pans with the riffles on the sides it's pretty easy to learn how to pan. Even tiny specks of Gold are heavy and want to stay in the pan. Separating the Gold from the black sand is the real challenge.

Easy to sell too. I asked my coin guy if he'd buy placer Gold and he said he'll buy it all day long as long as it's pretty, clean and real. Apparently there is fake placer Gold out there, crooks making nuggets out of melted jewelry.

He said it sells pretty quickly by the 1/4, 1/2 or full gram for spot plus. Makes sense, you come in with some $$ but don't have $200 for a 1/10 coin.
You can buy a gram or 2 of placer in a tiny zip lock baggie.
