Can anyone recommend a good outdoor wi-fi camera? Something that recorded video when it detects motion would be great. I would like to have it connected to my home network so I could access it from my phone or PC. Minimal wiring requirements would be ideal -- bonus points for solar charging.

I would stay away from those offering to monitor the camera for you. I purchased and installed a privet system which I can monitor over the internet through my DMZ.

I started with this:

https://www.amazon.com/stores/OOSSXX/OOSSXX/page/19640E12-6D29-4EB5-AB2C-598269E81040

BTW, you can buy the identical systems on eBay much cheaper.

I chose the 8 camera model and have 360 degree coverage around my property and store up to three weeks of recording on each camera with a 1.5TB hard disk upgrade

Thanks, Shootie. I only really need one camera to monitor the driveway in and the front porch. I am out in the country, so that would cover my basic needs.

I agree about keeping it out of "the cloud."

They need AC power so you need to mount them near a power source or a window. It's not as hard as it sounds

I think the "wireless" is only for data transmission. A real security camera should be hard wired to AC120 for constant use. I would definitely want a camera that was active 24/7 so I could look at it anytime.

How about POE Power Over Ethernet...? You'd have to run Cat5 or Cat6 4pair wire to each.

There's lots to choose from in almost every configuration:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=OOSSXX&_sacat=0
The computer and phone apps can be downloaded from the vendor's site. They work well and give you a lot of great features and options.

I guess I mean the program loaded on the DVR... not sure how that works? Or is it the DVR that 'is' the program and it saves to the HD?

The DVR uses its own operating system embedded in the DVRs firmware. The hard disk just stores the saved videos form the cameras

Its a sad day indeed when I have to have burglar alarms and cameras to protect whats mine. You should be allowed to shoot to kill intruders on sight, no questions asked

Run as a state rep. Start the ball rolling. That is what Florida did.

I just took this using my phone to take a picture from my camera system's monitor. It shows 4 of the 8 cameras I have. The pictures are quite clear

Why do you have security cameras INSIDE your house? Don't trust your family? (j/k no offense intended)

Those are placed in strategic areas where I can monitor and record any breakins

A safe in the garage is where to store a small amount of your ammo stockpile.
Pity the person that tries to use a cutting torch...

Great idea, leave a small safe where they can find it. They'll take it and be happy. Put a few carcasses in it with some rings & bracelets and they'll think you're a psycho and they'll leave you alone..
