Inflation and yield curve

I did a search: the yield curve is theoretically supposed to steepen
when investors expect inflation.
So why is the curve flat or inverted?

Back in ancient times when I was in college according to the economics professors interest rates generally were in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 % plus the rate of inflation. Today however we have the Federal Reserve, Politicians and assorted other agencies and regulators that have decided what rates will be regardless of economic reality.
