Catch & Cook: HOTEL POMPANO
EliasVFishing

Published on Jan 8, 2018
Just scouting around I hit my next fishing area in the Tampa Bay area. I caught my first set of tank jack crevalle (awesome fight) and a pompano for dinner. I didn't have a one hundred percent solid way of cooking it, but I didn't want to live off fast food and store bought produce all month either.
Jacks caught on jigs and shrimp and the pompano on a shrimp. The manatees were...a little interesting to get used to at first but after a few hours I warmed up to their presence. I fished the first few hours of the outgoing tide here and the bite totally tailed off.

I picked up a single burner from Walmart (don't buy that one it's absolute garbage and overheats instantly) . I got a great finish on one side with some butter and lemon juice and the other side was a little more mushy. I prepped with a basic gutting, diagonal slices some salt, flour, and lemon juice afterwards. It is one of the most delicious fish I have ever encountered so far. Maybe we will revisit this in the future!

Either way a fun outing and good fishing!

Testing my CHEAP "THUNDERFURY" ICE FISHING ROD!!! Ft. Jacob Korbel Fishing (Gloucester, NJ)
Extreme Philly Fishing

Published on Jan 11, 2018

January 11th, 2018 -- For my 2nd outing of this year, my friend Jacob Korbel (a.k.a. Jacob Korbel Fishing -- http://bit.ly/2EyjJ2s) and I decided to hit a nameless local pond in Gloucester, NJ, for some Multi-Species ice fishing.

My primary goal of the day was to catch my first 2018 fish! The secondary objective was to test my new Fiblink "Thunderfury" (what the heck is with that name...?) ice fishing rod. Heh.

By the way...the winner of the previous Give-Away (HRD#1) is in this video! The winner was Sh**n H. Please make sure to send me an e-mail at sheng12182527@gmail.com with your full username in the subject line!!! We will go from there! Also, please note that prizes must be claimed during a period of 7 days after the winner is announced. Otherwise, the winner is dropped and another person is selected!

There are Many Options for Winter Fishing... (Philadelphia, PA)
Extreme Philly Fishing

Published on Jan 17, 2018

January 17th, 2018 -- For my 3rd outing of 2018, I went to the Pennypack Creek for some "winter creek fishing."

The main objective of this video was to show you folks that ice fishing is NOT the only option when water temperatures are in the range of 32F. Sadly, even after trying all the different lures that I mentioned in the video, we were still unable to land a Trout from the Pennypack Creek. D:

January 18, 2018 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.
The Fisherman Magazine

Published on Jan 18, 2018
NOAA’s marine forecast shows winds and seas begin to subside a bit through Monday, January 22, and whenever weather allows there are party and charter boats sailing out of New Jersey ports for blackfish, cod, ling and some jumbo porgies offshore.

Show season is officially underway with a couple of options in the Delaware Valley and Staten Island area this Saturday, January 20; there are also upcoming shows and workshops to consider (the February edition of The Fisherman is out next week with a comprehensive calendar listing through March 1.)

If you’re chomping at the bit for that back bay striper opening, make sure you’re geared up; local shops are starting to get busy with winter rod and reel servicing, so be sure to drop your stuff now to have it ready in time for the March 1 opener.

Cod reports continue to be lacking with just a couple of fishable days over the past week and a couple of boats able to take advantage of those days. Although they managed to pick a few fish, it will take a few consecutive days of fishing to get a real handle on where we stand with this winter’s cod run. In the meantime, the New York Boat Show will be berthed at the Jacob Javits Convention Center from next Wednesday, January 24th through Sunday, January 28th. Be sure to stop by The Fisherman booth where you can pick up a pair of Star stainless steel pliers or dry bag for renewing your current subscription or a new subscription.

January 18, 2018 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
The Fisherman Magazine

Published on Jan 18, 2018
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, then why not check out the 7th annual Connecticut Surfcasters Association Demo Day and Extravaganza? The event is once again being held at the Clinton, Connecticut Town Hall. Doors open to the public at 9 am, and there is a requested $5 donation for entry. There is an extensive list of commercial vendors which will be on hand as well as used tackle for sale by club members. They also have several free seminars and ongoing demos running throughout the day. Check out the full event listing at TheFisherman.com.

On the fishing front, freshwater is the biggest game in town with anglers hitting both the ice where fishable ice remains or open water where last week’s mini-melt freed up a few spots. Regardless of how you’re getting a line in the water, the target species remain much the same as last week: perch, pike, pickerel, panfish, bass, trout and walleye. All of these species hit this week’s reports and across every corner of New England.

I hit the ice a couple times since last week’s report and found excellent action on both perch and walleye. This is turning out to be quite the ice fishing season, so be sure to take advantage of it while the fishing remains hot.

The story was also similar to last week’s report on cod as the weather was once again the limiting factor. There were only a few sailing trips made and the results were mixed to poor at best. It seems like there is a large pile of bait still hanging on the fishing grounds, but for reasons only known to the fish, they were rather reluctant to feed.

Last up, as I noted last week, it is almost the official kick-off of the 2018 fishing, hunting, boating and outdoor show season here in New England. The first official New England show for us at The Fisherman opens on the 26th when we’ll be at the New England Fishing & Outdoor Expo in Boxboro, MA. If you’d like a full look at where and when you can come see us here in New England, check out the 2018 Show Schedule posted in the News Section or check out the full events calendar today!

Ice Fishing Quest For Lake Erie Monsters!
Sea-Money Fishing

Published on Jan 20, 2018
Thanks to Chris and Tom for the invite. drove through the night many hours to arrive at catawba island, Ohio in the early morning. we set out into dark, windy and snowy conditions for the first of 2 days of ice fishing Lake Erie, day 1 lots of eyes, not much as far as size. Day 2, Chris got a 31" beast, and Billy got one 27"-28". This was my first time riding a machine onto the ice, and first time Ive even fished in a shanty, easily the coolest ice fishing experience of my life. Rumor has it this erie ice has cracked and become unsafe, really glad I got to do this at the right time. Hopefully not my last trip for erie ice walleyes.

3. Comment below how many different types of fish were caught in this video!

Catch & Cook *Attempt* - JACK CREVALLE
EliasVFishing

Published on Jan 18, 2018
If you made it to the pan after 7:15 I give you credit! I loved the idea of doing this on the beach under the sun but it didn't work out unfortunately for me. Tried my absolute best to salvage some meat but it looked better overall to feed this guy to the sharks!

Fishing was very good for jacks and trash sharks overall. For jacks I used the Peanut shad available here - http://bit.ly/2Dm93rJ and live pinfish.

I jumped on the beach and thought this would have made a great shore lunch...Guess not lol. I sat and chummed the fillets the next morning for a mess of bonnethead sharks and had other critters swimming through the "chum" slick. The cobia was elusive again.

Backpack Fishing with 2 Rods
TAFishing

Published on Jan 17, 2018
Sometimes it's good to just travel light and go backpack fishing. But Graeme uses two fishing rods, some bait and tackle and heads off down the river alone with his backpack. Travelling along the English Countryside Graeme tries to target different species of fish using different fishing techniques. He takes with him a float fishing setup and a Pike Fishing setup. Not only does he give fishing tips along the way, but he hooks into so many fish too! We hope you enjoy this video and keep an eye out for Part 2 which comes soon...

January 25, 2018 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.
The Fisherman Magazine

Published on Jan 25, 2018
The run towards March 1 heads into the homestretch after this weekend, which by all accounts should be a highly fishable one all the way around with high temperatures into the 40’s and 50’s on Friday and Saturday with light winds. Boats along the coast from Shark River in North Jersey to Indian River in Delaware continue sailing for blackfish as weather allows, though it’s been a pickier bite this winter than most (perhaps attributed to the recent thawing snot and ice.)

As our staff heads out to Manhattan for the New York Boat Show this week we learn that a few boats out of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn have been finding good mackerel action by heading south (putting them of course right off the Jersey Coast). Offshore cod, pollock and ling catches keeping rail-huggers happy on some of the deep offshore trips, while ice aficionados are still finding open ice in the northwest portion of the region. Some open water in South Jersey has a few creekside anglers thinking perch in the days ahead as well.

Severe winter weather had made much of January a month to forget where codfishing is concerned. That changed in a big way on Sunday and Monday when good weather and calm seas triggered lock and load action on the Block Island Grounds. Better yet, the fishing did not consist of just market size cod, but was made up of a nice mix of 10 to 20-pounders with a few bigger fish in the mix. The weather on Friday and Saturday looks good, so there should be plenty of hopeful anglers looking for a repeat of the action.

For the land bound, the New York Boat Show is camped at the Javit’s Center through Sunday, and we’ll be there with Star stainless steel fishing pliers and dry bags if you need to renew or subscribe. The Long Island Fishing Flea Market holds court on Saturday at the Hibernian Hall, 27 Locust Avenue in Babylon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

January 25, 2018 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
The Fisherman Magazine

It’s finally show time! That’s right, it is the official kick-off to the 2018 fishing, hunting, boating and outdoor show season for us here in New England this week, and we start off the run with a stop in Boxboro, MA this Friday through Sunday for the New England Fishing & Outdoor Expo. You can find The Fisherman at booth number 204 located in the main lobby area near the gazebo. We will have a ton of great promo items to go along with your subscriptions, and we’ll be selling some great Fisherman schwag including the awesome new Fisherman hats! For a look at our complete show schedule, be sure to check out the online events calendar.

Heading into the weekend it looked like it was going to be another tough week of cod fishing off Block Island. Well, that was until the boats hit the fishing grounds on Sunday and found that another big pile of large cod had arrived and they were hungry! All across the fleet it was catching galore with doubles quickly becoming commonplace and boats heading back to the dock early. With word of the good bite, everyone went back out in the nice weather on Monday and found even better action! Fish in excess of 40 pounds were caught and once again limits were the norm. This goes to show you that you never know what to expect when heading out for winter cod, but for those who take the shot when the weather looks good there is a chance to make some great memories and catch some tasty fish along the way!

Ice fishing is still quite good across much of New England, although open water and unsafe ice have begun to spread once again due to the slight warm-up and rains seen this week. This means extreme caution should be exercised if you head out over the weekend.

And last up, as you might know I am a big fan of the New England Patriots. Well, our editor down in New Jersey, Jim Hutchinson Jr., just so happens to be a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan. And since the Pats will be defending their title as Super Bowl champions this year against those Eagles, Jim and I figured that it might be fun to put a little wager on the game. We have a few ideas that we have been kicking around like having the loser fish with winner in their home waters while wearing the opposing jersey & hat. And photographic evidence would of course be required with payback in a subsequent magazine weekly cover photo in 2018 in both New England and New Jersey. But, we are also open to ideas from you. If you’ve got some good ideas – while keeping them family-friendly of course – please let us know in the comments section of YouTube. Stay tuned for next week’s video and we will announce the terms of our wager.

The Big Sheepshead Of The Lagoon

I fished with Sam on his Canoe @sneww23 on Instagram (he guides as well). We tried a few different things then worked our way into the back ponds as the main bay was a doozie. I fished with the 4" Berkeley Gulp! Nemesis and small mud crabs on jigheads all night. I used 1/4 oz DOA jigheads and slightly cracked the shell and ran the hook on socket out the other. I dropped a LOT of sheepshead as they have ridiculously boney mouths. Rounding out the catch were some redfish, a spadefish, and a snook. A lot of jacks stunned from cold shock swimming around. I have seen a lot of jack crevalles in a state of cold shock this week.

Fishing Small Creeks for The Biggest Trout Ive Ever Seen!!
Sea-Money Fishing

Published on Jan 28, 2018
Days 3 and 4 from our western NY trout saga. Brennan and myself had our sights set on landing big trout anyway and anywhere we could, the niagara river which was our target water was blown out so we gave some smaller tribs a shot and although the fishing was super tough, the fish we caught were worth the suffrage.

I forgot about these videos but there are still 2 more days of footage to come. Thanks for watching!

Also - I was spooled up with 6lb berkely nanofil for the first day which is a no stretch braid like line.. definitely not the right line to be using for these bigger trout in tight creeks where the fish eats 10' from your rod tip. a net is also generally a good thing to have... maybe even pliers.

I've already done it a million times but thanks again Kurt for showing us this one of a kind spot. Can't wait to go back (preferably when no bomb cyclones are in the area)

Buy Gulp sandworms: http://amzn.to/2E9GYko
Powerbait mice tails: http://amzn.to/2DNdkDJ

This video was taken before I got sick last December. I took my friend out surf fishing and we caught about 15. We also lost a lot of fish in the surf. These fish were pretty big, and we both used a dropper loop setup with Powerbait and Gulp sandworms. My friend was using a Gulp mullet and that bait also worked pretty well.

People ask me a lot about when is the best time to go surf fishing on the Oregon coast. The answer is simple, any month is good. Redtails can be caught year round. But you must be sure to check the surf, swell info before you go.

February 1, 2018 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.
The Fisherman Magazine

Published on Feb 1, 2018
Some wind in the forecast for Friday is expected to lay down on Saturday and Sunday along the coast; with temps in the 30’s and 40’s through the weekend and some precipitation (read: snow and/or rain) predicted on Sunday, looks to a tight winter window for hardcore anglers looking to score.

It’s been a stubborn pick on the blackfish grounds of late, while boats gunning for cod are heading well east to score. Mackerel have been reported thick at the Mud Hole, and good numbers of perch have kept savvy anglers well-stocked with flaky, white meals this season. As ice fishing opportunities in the NW portion of the Garden State continue, many hardcore anglers are looking to the first of February to score big on the fishing tackle and charter market.

It’s a “big game” weekend ahead - but before laying out the chips & salsa, hook up with a fish or two first on the New Jersey, Delaware fishing grounds. Plus, the editorial wager has been made between the New England edition and our South Jersey, Philly favorites.

February 1, 2018 Long Island Metro Fishing Report with Fred Golofaro
The Fisherman Magazine

Published on Feb 1, 2018
Good news for tautog fans longing for a return to spring blackfishing. While it must still go through the lawmaking process, the word from DEC is that there will be an open season for blackfish running from April 1 through the end of the month. The bag limit will be set at two fish with a minimum size of 16 inches. Check out this week’s video report for details on the fall season.
On the fishing front, cod reports remain sparse has wind and rough seas have kept most boats at the dock this week. There were reports of herring on the west end of the Island, and some white perch activity in South Shore tidal creeks. Of more interest was a report of tons of small stripers wintering over in the Connetquot and Carmans rivers. Connetquot State Park Preserve continues to shine in the trout department with good catches of quality trout being reported on a fairly steady basis.
If you are looking for some indoor sport this weekend, check out the Salt Water Sportsman Seminar Series at LIU Post on Saturday, or the Route 110 Fishing Flea Market on Super Bowl Sunday.

February 1, 2018 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
The Fisherman Magazine

Published on Feb 1, 2018
We are in-between fishing shows after a great turnout up in Boxboro last weekend, and you can find us in Hartford, CT next week for the CMTA Hartford Boat Show at the Connecticut Convention Center February 8-11. I’ll have more details next week on exactly where you can find us at the show.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, I have a couple of options for you. First up, why not take a ride to J&B Tackle for the second of three used tackle sales for the winter. The shop is located at 25 Smith Avenue in Niantic, CT, and doors open at 9 am on Saturday. They will have a ton of great new old stock, used tackle and sale items for every type of fishing from inshore to offshore, freshwater and salt.

I’ll have another event taking place on Saturday for you as I get into the reports, and be sure to stick around to the end of the video for an update on the Super Bowl wager between the New England and New Jersey editions of The Fisherman.

Last week began on the highest of highs for cod fishing off Block Island, but by week’s end it was back in the tank. The little snow event early in the week kept the boats at the dock, but most of the fleet got back out Wednesday with high hopes of success. As of the time of this video I had not heard how they fared, but with the beautiful weather on Wednesday I’m sure the fishing was great.

Fishable ice in Southern New England took a hit over the weekend due to warm weather and rain, but there remains plenty of safe ice to the north. I fished one evening early in the week in northern Connecticut and found a solid 7 to 8 inches of ice. Action was slow with some perch, pickerel and a small walleye iced. I received reports in my calls on Monday of some spots still having open water while others had 10 or even 12 inches of fishable ice with mixed success being noted on the usual suspects. One highlight, however, has been with anglers seeking pike as the action has been pretty good with a solid sprinkling of large pike being iced.

If you’re looking for some ice fishing instruction, as I often receive inquiries from local anglers asking if there are any ice fishing guides in the area, the Connecticut Fish & Wildlife department is hosting its 12th Annual Winter Festival this Saturday, February 3, from 10am- 3pm at Burr Pond State Park in Torrington, CT. The event is free and includes ice fishing instruction, a fish fry, ice safety, winter games, ice sculptures and more! You can check out all the details in the events calendar posted at thefisherman.com.

Ok, last but not least we have the Super Bowl this Sunday between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. As I noted last week, I am a big Pats fan while our New Jersey editor, Jim Hutchinson Jr, is an Eagles fan. To make things a little more interesting with this match-up, we are putting a friendly wager on the game. Whichever edition’s team loses, that editor will fish in the winner’s region this season while wearing the winner’s team gear, they’ll do their weekly video in said gear and we will get a photo from the day to appear on a weekly edition of the magazine. So, join me in cheering on our New England Patriots, and let’s hope for a big win!

We got word the Giant Jack Crevalle were at the North jetty of the inlet. Needless, to say we got an an EPIC topwater popper bite. The fishing was unreal for about 2 hours. These drag screaming man sized monsters, will make any grown men cry. Jacks are often found on jettys, piers, and the surf in Florida.
